  • A Brief History of the Organization for International Development, Dr. Dayna Smith's Blog on Bigsight
    March, 2011
As a medical professional in the obstetrics and gynecology sector, I maintain a position as an Attending Physician at the Classic City OB/GYN clinic in Athens, Georgia. In addition to my work at this institution, I travel abroad annually with the Organization for International Development to conduct international medical missions. Since 2008, I have been affiliated with this organization and provided free health care for individuals across the world.

With a motto of “helping others to help themselves,” the Organization for International Development is a tax-exempt charity that was founded in 1990. In the founding year, several dentists traveled to a rural town in Western Jamaica to provide dental care for what they expected to be a small number of citizens. Once they arrived, the situation was surprising. Several people were living in poverty with little to no access to health care, and this startling fact inspired the establishment of the Organization for International Development. Since this original trip, the group has widened its traveling area to additional countries like Ethiopia, Ghana, Haiti, and several locations in the Caribbean.

Members of this society work to treat diabetes, wounds, dental, ophthalmologic, and other problems in the communities they visit. These medical professionals, including dentists, doctors, nurses, medical students, and emergency care personnel, also provide health education and physical therapy workshops to educate individuals in the practice of proper nutrition, wellness, teenage pregnancy, and healthy lifestyle choices.

The Organization for International Development provides free services for those in need in at-risk urban communities across the globe. Other initiatives started by this society include a holiday toy drive and a spring luncheon. Upcoming service missions will take place in Jamaica, Haiti, Ghana, and Ethiopia.
