Karl Rove
December, 2010
by Dr. Gary Helmbrecht
I greatly admire early leaders in American history such as Thomas Jefferson, Alexander Hamilton, and Benjamin Franklin, while also holding respect for notable political thinkers of the modern era. I am particularly drawn to the political philosophies of Glenn Beck, Mark Levine, and Karl Rove. Of all the figures that have guided the conservative movement in the past 30 years, none stands out so prominently as Karl Rove. Born in 1950, Rove dropped out of college at the University of Utah in 1970 to serve as Executive Director of the College Republican National Committee. Throughout the 1970s, Rove slowly worked his way to prominence, functioning as a Republican political strategist in Texas. In 1980, Karl Rove attained the national stage, leading George H. W. Bush’s unsuccessful primary run against Ronald Reagan. Active throughout the 1980s in many local, state, and national elections, Rove engineered George W. Bush’s successful Texas gubernatorial campaign in 1994. Rove continued his work with Bush in 2000, as the chief strategist for his presidential bid, as well as his successful reelection campaign in 2004. Rove’s contributions to the conservative movement are not limited to these notable election victories. Since 2008, Rove has been active as a contributor to Newsweek and The Wall Street Journal and as a television analyst for Fox News. Although he never completed a college degree, Rove has proved an astute student of history, with a keen understanding the American political process. While I do not always agree with Rove’s opinions, I find him to be a compelling figure because of the depth of his knowledge of the intricacies of the U.S. political system. Rove has been consistently important to the success of the national Republican platform over some four decades, and I feel confident that he will be instrumental in leading political campaigns in the next decade as well.
