  • Bridge and Crown Materials That Best Suit Your Budget, Dr. Gary Klemons DDS

    By: Dr. Gary Klemons DDS

As a career dentist specializing in dental implant surgery, I often guide patients to bridge and crown materials that best suit their budget and long-term dental needs. The array of replacement tooth materials available has grown tremendously in the past twenty years, but there are some basics that can help patients make educated choices. There are two broad classes of bridge and crown materials: metals and synthetics.

Gold alloy is used when maximum strength is desired and appearance is not a factor, while non-precious alloys are generally used when cost is a primary factor.

Non-precious alloys that contain nickel are not generally recommended, as nickel is toxic and can result in health problems for some people.

Titanium is another metal option, combining maximum strength, light weight, and biocompatibility. Titanium is the material of choice for dental implants, bone pins, and joint replacements for these reasons.

Porcelain is a synthetic material that combines wear resistance with natural appearance. Recently developed zirconium porcelains are utilized in bridges without requiring a metal substructure. Many porcelain formulations are harder than tooth enamel and can wear away the teeth they come in contact with. Fortunately, there are now some soft porcelains with the same hardness as tooth enamel.

Standard composite is not very strong, and should only be used in limited cases for crowns.

Indirect Ceramic Optimized Polymer is a synthetic option that limits the risk of wearing down opposing teeth. Not quite as wear resistant or natural in appearance as porcelain, it still has good durability and overall function.
