  • Your Child’s First Dental Visit, Dr. Ivette Diaz
    October, 2011
by Dr. Ivette M. Diaz at ABC123 Pediatric Dentistry

At ABC123 Pediatric Dentistry, we treat children of all ages, providing preventive care, dental treatments, and education. Here, Dr. Ivette M. Diaz outlines a few things to consider when planning your child’s first trip to see the dentist.

Most pediatric dentists and the American Dental Association recommend that children see the dentist for the first time around the age of one, or within about six months of their first tooth. The first dental visit usually does not last long, and serves mostly to let the child meet the dentist and have a positive experience associated with dental care. The visit is also an excellent opportunity for parents to ask any questions they may have about caring for their children’s teeth as they come in. Generally, your dentist will check the child’s teeth for decay, look at the bite, and keep an eye out for common dental problems in young children, like baby bottle rot.

A good pediatric dentist will cover a range of topics with parents, including fluoride treatments, oral hygiene, teething, nutrition, and habits like thumb sucking or tongue thrusting. In order to monitor oral health and make the child as comfortable as possible with the dentist and dental care, most dentists recommend visits every six months.

Before the first visit, parents should talk with their children about what to expect at the dentist’s office, playing up the positive elements of the visit and explaining what will happen. Although many general dentists treat children as well, pediatric dentists receive an extra two years of training in the treatment of children, including gentle cleanings, educating young patients, and working with small jaws and mouths. If your child is nervous about the visit, has special needs, or presents any other concerns about dental care, a pediatric dentist may be an excellent choice.
