Dr. James Lauren Hargrove's Educational History, Dr. James Lauren Hargrove's Blog on Bigsight
April, 2011
As a longtime resident of Georgia, I am proud to have attended some of the leading educational institutions in the state. After graduating from high school, I enrolled at Kennesaw State College, known today as Kennesaw State University (KSU). Located just northwest of Atlanta, KSU was originally founded in 1963 as a junior college in the University System of Georgia. Since then, the university has grown to become the third-largest university in the state, receiving recognition for its academic programs from publications such as U.S. News & World Report. I studied biology and chemistry as an undergraduate at KSU, establishing a solid theoretical background in science that served me well as I pursued graduate studies in dentistry.
After receiving my Bachelor of Science in 1994, I moved east to Augusta and matriculated at the School of Dentistry at the Medical College of Georgia, the only dental school in the state. Recently renamed the Georgia Health Sciences University College of Dental Medicine, the school remains dedicated to meeting the oral health needs of residents in Georgia and the larger community. Approximately 85 percent of the school’s 1,500 graduates currently practice in Georgia, comprising a quarter of all licensed dentists in the state; additionally, the school’s clinics provide a full range of oral health care services to patients in Augusta-Richmond County. Through the school’s four-year Doctor of Dental Medicine program, students gain early clinical experience under the supervision of expert faculty and dedicate an entire year to honing their patient care abilities.
I completed my Doctor of Dental Medicine in 1999, gaining a broad base of knowledge that enabled me to establish a successful private practice in Atlanta. As importantly, my graduate dental studies instilled in me a sense of professional responsibility. As a dental student, I founded World Dental Outreach, Inc., a nonprofit organization devoted to providing dental care to underserved communities, and I continue to work to provide quality oral health care in Georgia and beyond.
