  • Sports and Energy Drinks and Your Health, By Katalina Ramirez, DDS, MS
    May, 2012
Many parents allow their children to drink sports and energy beverages, assuming that the drinks are a healthier alternative to soda. A new study has found, however, that sports drinks and energy drinks damage enamel, the protective covering on teeth. While the drinks do have vitamins and minerals that soda lacks, they still contain tooth-damaging acid. Researchers found that after only five days of sports beverages, the enamel begins to thin. Enamel protects teeth from cavities, so when children consume these drinks, they may be endangering their teeth.

Instead of acidic sports drinks, consider replenishing your electrolytes and strengthening your muscles with milk. Milk actually improves muscle function and repair more than sports and energy drinks do, contains electrolytes, and is an excellent source of nutrients. If you do drink sports drinks and energy drinks, rinse out your mouth with water when you finish in order to minimize the damage to your teeth.
