Michael Suk, MD, JD, MPH, holds esteem as one of the United States’ leading authorities on the relationship between outdoor recreation and human health. Selected in 2003 as a White House Fellow, one of the nation’s most prestigious opportunities for young professionals to serve their country in their chosen professions, Dr. Suk served for a year as Special Advisor to former United States Secretary of the Interior Gale Norton. Dr. Michael Suk also co-authored a law review article with Secretary of the Interior Norton, exploring the connection between a healthy lifestyle and outdoor activities such as hiking, camping, and bicycling. Partly due to his tireless advocacy, in 2011, the National Park Service incorporated several important principles in their Centennial “Call to Action: Preparing for a Sceond Century of Stewardship and Engagement.”

Dr. Michael Suk’s extraordinary academic career began in 1986 at Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota, and in 1990 he earned a BA in African American History. He then enrolled in a program leading to an MD with the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine. In 1992, in the midst of his medical studies, Dr. Suk also attended courses at Boston University School of Law. One year later, he enrolled in a one-year Master’s in Public Health program at Boston University School of Public Health. Dr. Michael Suk received both his JD and MPH from Boston University in 1995 and his MD from the University of Illinois in 1997.

Dr. Michael Suk completed his residency as an orthopaedic surgeon at the Montefiore Medical Center at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York. Dr. Suk followed his residency with a fellowship in orthopaedic traumatology at New York’s Hospital for Special Surgery. Dr. Michael Suk quickly gained acknowledgement as an expert in the treatment of broken bones and the accompanying complications. In 2004, following his one-year term as a White House Fellow, Dr. Michael Suk worked with the United States National Park Service as a Special Advisor on Health and Recreation.

Since 2004, Dr. Michael Suk has functioned as Division Chief of Orthopaedic Trauma Surgery at the University of Florida’s Shands Medical Center in Jacksonville. In addition, Dr. Suk serves the university as an Associate Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery, Associate Director of the Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Program, and Associate Director of the Regional Trauma System.

Dr. Michael Suk maintains an active law license and has practiced in the field of Health Law in Atlanta, Chicago, and Washington, D.C. He remains a widely sought-after speaker on a variety of topics, most notably prevention of chronic disease, childhood and adult obesity through outdoor recreation, and complex orthopaedic fracture management. Additionally, Dr. Michael Suk is the lead author of a definitive textbook on orthopaedic measurements, instruments, and outcomes.
