  • Dr. Ron Israeli: Common Causes of Urinary Incontinence, by Dr. Ron Israeli
    May, 2012
Certified by the American Board of Urology, Dr. Ron Israeli treats patients with an array of urological conditions. One such condition that frequently causes patients to seek medical treatment is urinary incontinence. Here, Dr. Israeli shares common causes for this medical condition.

Urinary incontinence is far more common than people realize. In fact, about 10 to 30 percent of all women and 1.5 to 5 percent of all men experience urinary incontinence at some point in their lifetime. Typically, incontinence is a symptom of a larger problem, and it can be temporary or persistent. Causes of urinary incontinence include:

    1. Habits, such as alcohol and caffeine consumption or over-hydration, can lead to urine leakage.

    2. Some medical conditions, like urinary tract infections or constipation, may lead to incontinence.

    3. Pregnancy, childbirth, and hysterectomy can weaken the pelvic floor walls, causing the condition.

    4. Prostate conditions such as enlarged prostate or cancer may cause urinary incontinence.

    5. Aging may decrease bladder capacity, and hormonal changes that result from aging can cause a deteriorating bladder and pelvis lining, which may lead to the condition.
