Dr. Sami Bittar: An Introduction to Facelift Surgery, Dr. Sami Bittar
June, 2011
Facelift surgeries address a number of cosmetic issues, including sagging skin; creases along the eyes, mouth, or nose; loose skin in the chin or jaw; and misplaced fatty deposits. Before committing to the procedure, individuals should understand that facelifts do not reverse the aging process, nor do they alter the fundamental appearance of the face. Many other forms of non-invasive rejuvenation techniques exist and those who opt for surgery risk infection and scarring. At the same time, none of the non-invasive procedures achieve the same effect. Those who choose to receive a facelift, however, must have realistic expectations and discuss their desires with the cosmetic surgeon prior to the surgery date.
During the procedure, the physician administers anesthesia and other medication to ensure the patient’s comfort. The type of anesthesia depends on the expected length and extent of the surgery. For a traditional facelift, the plastic surgeon makes an incision at the temple along the hairline, which goes around the ear and ends around the lower scalp. Sometimes, plastic surgeons may perform all necessary steps with a smaller incision. Through the incision, the plastic surgeon sculpts existing fat, repositions tissues, and lifts the deeper layers. He or she then stretches the skin tightly over the new face contours and removes any excess. Sometimes, the physician makes a second incision under the chin to better access the neck.
After the surgery, the plastic surgeon will place a bandage over the face to reduce swelling and bruising and he or she sometimes positions a small tube to drain any excess fluids that may collect under the skin. The patient must follow all aftercare instructions closely to minimize discomfort and promote quick healing. The plastic surgeon should discuss necessary aftercare both before and after the actual procedure so that the patient is thoroughly aware of what will be required. Once swelling and bruising subside, the patient will begin to see the results of the surgery.
Facelift surgeries carry a number of risks, making it imperative that the patient discuss any concerns beforehand. The most serious risks include infection, nerve damage, loss of skin sensation, permanent discoloration, and deep vein thrombosis. Sometimes, scar tissue may become unsightly or results may not meet expectations. In these cases, patients may consider revisional surgery.
