  • Dr. Sid Danesh Explains Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Photorejuvenation, Dr. Sid Danesh

At my dermatology clinic in Beverly Hills, California, photorejuvenation is a popular procedure, especially for treating sun damage. Using the intense pulsed light (IPL) technique, I am able to enhance the evenness of skin tone, removing freckles, blemishes, redness, and other types of discoloration.

IPL technology was designed for photoaged skin and significantly improves its appearance, often making patients look much younger. The IPL procedure works on rosacea, acne rosacea, hyperpigmentation, sun damage or dyspigmentation, telangiectases (broken capillaries), birth marks, and a range of other skin disorders. A typical IPL session lasts 20–30 minutes, and depending on the extent of skin damage, a patient’s skin can be rejuvenated in only a few treatments.

The IPL device does two things simultaneously. Damaged surface skin is removed, and the dermis or second layer of skin cells is encouraged to produce more collagen. The removal of damaged skin helps to improve tone and color, and the production of collagen leads to firmer, smoother skin. The ultraviolet frequencies are filtered out, so there is no risk of UV damage. The light pulses created by the IPL equipment are very short, minimizing discomfort and protecting the surrounding tissues. Most patients experience only minor skin irritation, similar in appearance to a sunburn. Usually, this redness disappears within a day. The full effects of the IPL treatment will appear within a few weeks as the dermis creates collagen and new layers of skin are generated.

There are very few side effects to IPL photorejuvenation treatments, and long-term adverse effects are extremely rare. The IPL procedure is a safe and effective way to improve the appearance of sun-damaged skin and to treat many types of skin conditions.
