The University of Oxford, Dr. Simon Farrow
November, 2010
Born and raised in Stamford, England, Dr. Simon Farrow attended the University of Oxford, where he earned Bachelors of Arts, Medicine, and Surgery, as well as a Master of Arts. Historians have not found a clear date when Oxford was established, but instruction can be traced back to the 11th century. Oxford became a European center for higher learning after King Henry II banned his country’s students from attending the University of Paris toward the end of the 12th century. Many of the returning British scholars settled in Oxford. The town began to attract a number of scholars from other regions and multiple religious sects maintained houses in the town. In the middle of the 13th century, private benefactors began establishing colleges in Oxford, which became private centers of study. The earliest institutions included University College, Balliol College, and Merton College. The colleges grew rapidly in popularity as scholars moved out of halls or religious houses and began to forge affiliations with distinct colleges. Today, Oxford remains a collegiate university, meaning it operates as a sort of federation. All of its colleges remain autonomous, but are joined under a central governing body led by a chancellor. At present, Oxford comprises 38 distinct colleges, each of which has its own admissions process and curricula. Traditionally, scholars consider Oxford the best British university, rivaled only by Cambridge, and one of the top 10 universities worldwide, joining the ranks of Harvard University, Tokyo University, Stanford University, and Keio University.
