    December, 2010
Since 1993, Dr. William Flynn has led operations at the Encinitas-based Center for Plastic Surgery in California, where he oversees plastic surgery procedures ranging from breast lifts and tummy tucks to facelifts and lip contouring. As an integral member of North County, San Diego, business community, Dr. William Flynn gives back to the local region by donating his time and resources to a number of charities and organizations.

Hope for a Cure: The Hope for a Cure nonprofit foundation aims to raise both awareness of and funds for cancer research in the San Diego area. Established by five passionate San Diegans, Hope for a Cure raises revenue to donate equipment to the region’s many cancer research institutes, including the Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center; the Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute; the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) Moores Cancer Center; and other research centers and organizations. Recently, Hope for a Cure’s funds aided in obtaining and gifting a microscope to the Kimmel Cancer Center.

San Diego Homeless Shelters: The City of San Diego provides a variety of services to its homeless residents. These services include homeless outreach teams that serve as first points of contact in connecting homeless residents with much needed care services and a special-needs housing program, which provides nearly 300 beds to the city’s homeless who suffer from mental illnesses or drug abuse. San Diego’s Cortez Hill Family Center provides room for some one hundred homeless children and their parents in a 42-unit transitional housing facility operated by the local chapter of the YWCA. Other San Diego homeless shelter providers and operators include the nonprofit Alpha Project, the Interfaith Shelter Network, and the San Diego Rescue Mission.

  • Breast Lift Procedures, Dr. William Flynn
    January, 2011
    by Dr. William Flynn

I have performed a wide range of cosmetic surgery procedures at my San Diego practice over the past 19 years, including breast enhancements, tummy tucks, liposuction, and face lifts. I also frequently perform breast augmentations and breast lifts.

Although related to breast augmentations, breast lifts differ in that that their primary purpose is not to enlarge the size, but to enhance the shape of the breasts. Also known as mastopexy, breast lift surgery raises and tightens loose and sagging breasts. It also gives renewed firmness and shape to breasts that have lost volume following childbirth.

Breast lifts incisions often conform to the natural contour of the breasts, encircling the areolas and running vertically down to another incision along the crease under the breasts. This anchor shape allows the surgeon to remove excess breast skin, move the nipple and areola to a higher position, and tighten the skin surrounding the areola. Scars from these incisions fade significantly with time but never completely disappear.

Another breast lift technique known as the concentric mastopexy utilizes circular incisions around the areolas. This technique minimizes incisions, but its effectiveness varies according to breast size and desired shape. Patients with either smaller breasts or less sagging than average benefit the most from concentric mastopexy.

Patients sometimes choose to undergo breast lifts in conjunction with breast implant procedures. Breast implants may enhance the effect of the breast lift and make it last longer. The effects of breast lifts are permanent, but gravity, weight fluctuation, aging, and pregnancy may eventually lead to sagging and volume loss.

Breast lifts are outpatient procedures, meaning the patient can leave the cosmetic surgery office the same day of the operation. Although most patients can comfortably return to work after a week or two, I advise them to wear a supportive bra for several weeks following a breast lift. For further information on the breast lift procedures I perform, visit my practice online at drwilliamflynn.com.
