  • Illinois State Scholars Exhibit Ongoing Commitment to Achievement
    October, 2011
With competition for top colleges and universities continuing to rise, an increasing number of students vie for academic recognition such as that offered by the Illinois State Scholars program. The Illinois Student Assistance Commission selects Illinois State Scholars based on a number of criteria, including class rank at the end of the junior year and scores from the SAT, ACT, and/or Prairie State Achievement Exams. Approximately 500,000 graduating seniors have earned Illinois State Scholars recognition since the program began in the 1950s.

Students recognized as Illinois State Scholars tend to catch the eye of college admissions officers. Former Illinois State Scholar award winners such as Edward R. Hannsz, who is slated to receive his Juris Doctor from The University of Arizona James E. Rogers College of Law in 2013, accepted an invitation from Florida International University after high school. Mr. Hannsz obtained his Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration in Finance with distinction, graduating summa cum laude with a 3.95 grade point average (GPA).

For students like Edward R. Hannsz, who currently has a 3.75 GPA in law school, the criteria used to determine Illinois State Scholars served as a strong focus throughout their high school years. Mr. Hannsz won the Prairie State Achievement Award for his outstanding scores on that test, which is given to Illinois students. Edward R. Hannsz developed a persistent work ethic in his quest for recognition as an Illinois State Scholar, including earning the rank of Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts of America and becoming certified as a lifeguard, a trait that continues to serve him well in his current academic and professional pursuits.
