Professor of American Studies - Georgetown UniversityWashington, District of ColumbiaGeorgetown University Professor Edward Ingebretsen has amassed numerous accomplishments in his lengthy career. While earning his Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy and Master’s degree in Education from Loyola Marymount University, Edward Ingebretsen earned membership in Alpha Sigma Nu, a Jesuit honor society. During his years earning a Ph.D. at Duke University, Edward Ingebretsen won a Catholic Press Association Award for Poetry in 1982 and was named a Mellon Fellow and a Finalist in the 1985 Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation Competition. As an Associate Professor at Georgetown University, Edward Ingebretsen won Faculty Honors in 1995, was named a Finalist for the Cardin Chair in the Humanities at Loyola University Maryland in 1996, and received consecutive Fulbright grants in 1997 and 1998. To achieve status as a full professor at Georgetown, Edward Ingebretsen’s work was reviewed over a period of 10 years. He received an average of 4.8 out of 5.0 on teaching evaluations and taught many popular and politically important classes, instructing an average of 200 students each year. Edward Ingebretsen has written critically acclaimed works that have earned praise from a diverse array of reviewers, including author Stephen King and the Alpha Sigma Nu Book Awards committee. His is the author of three full-length academic books, including At Stake: Monsters and a Rhetoric of Fear in Public Culture, which was published by the University of Chicago Press in 2001. Edward Ingebretsen has also written articles on literature, gender, sexuality, and culture for several peer-reviewed scholarly journals. Among others, “Gone Shopping: The Commodification of Same Sex Desire” was published in the Journal of Gay, Lesbian, and Bisexual Identity, while “The Monster in the Home: True Crime and the Traffic in Body Parts” appeared in the Journal of American Culture. In a different field of education, Edward Ingebretsen has functioned as a health professional and trainer for over two decades. He is currently the Director of Training at Results Gyms in Washington, D.C. An effective manager, Edward Ingebretsen doubled revenue over the years from 2004 to 2007, doubled the number of trainers, and opened two new clubs. Edward Ingebretsen holds training certifictions from the American College of Sports Medicine and the Aerobic and Fitness Association of America. He also developed the company’s first formal training program. In 2008, Washington City Paper named Edward Ingebretsen “Best Trainer/Professor in Washington, D.C.” Currently, Edward Ingebretsen is pursuing certification from the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) and a Master of Professional Studies in Human Resources Management from Georgetown University.
