  • Best hiking trails in California
    March, 2011

In addition to his work as a business consultant and financial executive in Santa Barbara, California, Elias Argyropoulos enjoys hiking in his free time. The state of California boasts some of the most breathtaking natural environments in the world, many of which are only accessible by hiking or camping. Here is a brief list of some of the best hiking destinations in the Golden State.

Half Dome, Yosemite – This one or two day hike, considered one of the most beautiful in the world, covers just over eight miles of the John Muir Trail. Hikers travel winding trails alongside majestic waterfalls and flowing rivers en route to the top of Half Dome, a giant monolith sliced in half by the movement of a glacier many years ago. After a steep climb up the rock face with the assistance of steel cables, hikers are treated to a 360-degree panoramic view of the entire Yosemite Valley. Be warned, though, that the hike also covers more than a mile in elevation, making it quite grueling for some.

Joshua Tree – Winding through the desert terrain and bizarre rock formations, the many trails of Joshua Tree National Park give hikers a firsthand look at the unique landscape. Many hikers take periodic detours to climb the rocks, which allows for a clear view of the whole park. Joshua Tree also houses a number of campsites for those planning a multiple-day excursion. The park often reaches temperatures of more than 100 degrees Fahrenheit, so visitors during the warm months of spring and summer should always bring enough water.

John Muir Trail – For experienced backpackers, the 211-mile John Muir Trail is a must when visiting California. Starting at Yosemite Valley in the north and continuing south to Mount Whitney, the John Muir Trail takes weeks to complete and winds through some of the most beautiful scenery California has to offer. The trail, which passes through Sequoia National Park and Kings Canyon National Park, takes its name from celebrated naturalist John Muir, whose efforts helped save several famous parks in California.

  • Hiking Etiquette By Elias Argyropoulos

As an avid hiker, I enjoy exploring the diverse landscape of California’s south coast. With thousands of people heading out to hit the trails on sunny days, observing appropriate trail etiquette becomes essential, making time spent in nature safe and enjoyable for all who pursue it. Failure to observe such etiquette can lead not only to safety issues, but can also harm delicate ecosystems.

    1. Pack it in, pack it out. This most basic of trail courtesies protects the pristine nature of the wild. Additionally, animals may come across trash left behind by hikers and ingest it or injure themselves on it. Help protect the trails you hike by leaving nothing manmade behind.

    2. Do not take souvenirs, take pictures. Just as you leave nothing of yourself behind in nature, be sure you leave it as you found it. If you find interesting plants, fossils, or other natural wonders, leave them behind for other hikers to enjoy, as well. If you must have a souvenir of your hike, snap a photograph.

    3. Always stay on the trail. Going off trail, cutting between switchbacks, and taking shortcuts can harm the flora and fauna. Staying on the trail also reduces your risk of getting lost.

    4. Let other hikers know if you approach them from behind. Call out as you approach, and pass on the left. As you hike, stay to the right so others can pass you.

    5. Allow others to enjoy the sounds of nature. Hike quietly, keeping conversations soft.

    6. If you are hiking as part of a group, walk in single file or in such a manner that you only take up half the trail.
