Experienced Medical ProfessorChapel Hill, North CarolinaIn 2003, the Duke Clinical Research Institute in Durham, North Carolina, appointed Anesthesiologist and Intensivist Dr. Elliott Bennett-Guerrero to a position as Director of Perioperative Clinical Research. Dr. Bennett-Guerrero currently investigates systemic inflammation during surgery and its role in complications, and surgical site infection. He also studies the safety of blood transfusions in the quest for clinical techniques to reduce complications for high-risk patients. In 2003, Duke University hired Dr. Elliott Bennett-Guerrero as Associate Professor of Anesthesiology, and promoted him in 2008 to the position of Professor of Anesthesiology with tenure. As an academic researcher, Dr. Elliott Bennett-Guerrero speaks frequently at medical symposia, conferences, and association meetings. He delivers presentations on such topics as “Variability in Blood Transfusion in Cardiac Surgery.” He writes articles for various medical periodicals, including The Journal of the American Medical Association and The New England Journal of Medicine. Dr. Elliott Bennett-Guerrero serves on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Anesthesia and previously served as Guest Editor for Anesthesia & Analgesia. Dr. Elliott Bennett-Guerrero is a member of several medical societies. In addition to the American Medical Association, he participates in activities of the Society of Cardiovascular Anesthesiologists, where he served on the Scientific Program Committee for two years. As a member of the American Society of Anesthesiologists, he undertook activities with the Subcommittee on Clinical Circulation. The Association of University Anesthesiologists elected Dr. Elliott Bennett-Guerrero to full membership in 2002. Dr. Elliott Bennett-Guerrero resides in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, with his wife and their two sons. He serves as a member of the city’s Initiating Committee, promoting a community-based process for development of the Comprehensive Plan. He proudly contributes to the scholarship program for students interested in becoming public defenders at the University of Colorado Law School. Since his years as a Harvard University medical student, he has appeared in the NOVA documentary series Doctors’ Diaries on PBS. The program follows the professional evolution of seven medical students from 1987 to the present.
