Erich Mauff's Schools

  • Brown University , Class of 1993
    Bachelors in Economics

I graduated from Brown University in 1993, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and Modern European History. Brown was founded in 1763 by the Rev. James Manning, who was sent to Rhode Island by the Philadelphia Association of Baptist Churches. Aided by local Congregationalists, Manning secured a charter the following year, establishing a college in the city of Warren. In 1765, Manning was sworn in as the college’s first president. Five years later, the school moved to its current location with monetary funding coming from the Brown family, securing the institution’s modern name. The Brown family was deeply involved with the university for decades, with members serving as professors and holding seats on the board. Nicholas Brown, Jr., one of the school’s graduates, contributed a significant amount of money for an endowed professorship in 1804, at which time the school was officially named Brown University. At present, U.S. News & World Report ranks Brown 16th among all universities in the United States and sixth for undergraduate education. Brown is particularly celebrated for its programs in history, economics, English, mathematics, and computer science. Recently, Brown renewed its commitment to sustainability by forming an Energy and Environmental Advisory Committee, which is guiding the university toward its admirable goal of carbon neutrality. Last year, Brown fulfilled the goals of its Campaign for Academic Enrichment, which raised funds for the construction of multiple new academic buildings, including the Sidney E. Frank Hall for Life Sciences, an Aquatics and Fitness Center, and the Perry and Marty Granoff Center for the Creative Arts.

I enjoy a variety of sports and outdoor activities including tennis, rowing, golf, squash, and cycling. As a Brown University alumnus, I support the Brown University Sports Foundation (BUSF), which provides nearly half of the Brown Athletic Department’s yearly budget for 37 varsity and 7 club teams.

This money comes from two primary sources: earnings from Brown Athletic endowments and annual-use giving. Annual-use BUSF fundraising goals give every Brown Bear team an individual target within a total fundraising goal ($3.25 million for 2011). These team-led fundraising efforts are a critical part of the total sports department budget, ensuring that Brown teams remain competitive at Ivy League and National levels. The endowment arm of BUSF oversees significant individual contributions, with donors at the $100,000 level supporting equipment budgets for teams, and donors at the $1 million-plus level endowing coaching chair positions.

Facilities are another major focus of BUSF fundraising efforts, with recently completed projects including the Meister/Kavan turf field, the Berylson Family Fields, and the floor renovation of the Pizzitola basketball court. An ambitious ongoing effort is the Athletic Complex Project, a $46 million addition to the existing athletics complex. The new facilities currently being constructed include an aquatics center, a fitness center, a strength and conditioning center, and a green landscaped quadrangle.

When completed, the Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center will provide Brown swimmers with a 56-meter swimming pool with three-meter diving and spectator seating for 800. In a nod towards historical continuity, the original cupola from Marvel Gymnasium, which was demolished in 2002, features prominently on the the soon-to-be-completed Nelson Fitness Center. The entire project started in May 2010 and will end in March 2012.
