Dr. Feliciano Serrano is the Medical Director and President of Serrano Kidney and Vascular Access Center in Huntington Park, California. With the goal of making a difference in his community, Dr. Feliciano Serrano provides a range of services that includes ultrasounds of kidneys, arteries, and veins; thrombectomy of dialysis access; coiling and embolization of access and peripheral; insertion and removal of tunneled dialysis catheters; portacath replacement and removal; and more. Dr. Feliciano Serrano earned a Masters in Biological Technology and Genetics through the California State University system before moving on to the MCP Hahnemann School of Medicine (now the Drexel University College of Medicine) and then the USC Keck School of Medicine. After graduating with his medical degree, Dr. Feliciano Serrano began his post graduate training with an internal medicine residency at the White Memorial Medical Center in Los Angeles. After completing his residency, Dr. Feliciano Serrano began two fellowships concurrently at the University of Vermont College of Medicine, one of which focused on Nephrology and Hypertension, the other of which focused on Thrombosis in Kidney Disease. After completing these fellowships, Dr. Serrano began working at Veteran’s Hospital in Phoenix, Arizona, where his responsibilities included managing a bustling emergency department. Then in 2009, Dr. Feliciano Serrano decided to open Serrano Kidney and Vascular Center where he has been providing access care for nephrology patients. Today, Dr. Feliciano Serrano has achieved his goal of working with ailing members of the East Los Angeles community where he was raised. Dr. Feliciano Serrano not only meets his patients’ needs through his ability to communicate in both English and Spanish, he is also a multifaceted doctor. In fact, Dr. Feliciano Serrano is one of a limited number of doctors with three specialties. Besides working with patients with kidney disease, Dr. Feliciano Serrano sees patients who require vascular interventions as well.

    Currently serving as President and Medical Director of Serrano Kidney and Vascular Access Center, Dr. Feliciano Serrano is an accomplished physician and a Diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine.

    A branch of internal medicine, nephrology focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the kidney. Nephrologists treat patients who display conditions such as kidney stones, proteinuria, hematuria, acute renal failure, and chronic kidney disease. In many cases, diseases that affect the functioning of the kidneys also affect broad regions of the body. For example, autoimmune diseases such as lupus affect not only the kidneys, but also the heart, lungs, blood cells, skin, and joints. As a result, many patients seeking treatment from a nephrologist may also attain the attention of other specialists.

    To achieve a specialty in nephrology in the United States, a physician must complete a residency program in internal medicine and a fellowship in nephrology. The fellowship consists of two or more years of extensive training in the diagnosis and management of kidney disease. After completing the requisite training, the physician must achieve board approval in nephrology.

    Many professional societies and organizations contribute to the development of the modern field of nephrology. In the United States, prominent organizations include the nephrology, the American Society of Nephrology, the American Society of Diagnostic and Interventional Nephrology, and the American Association of Kidney Patients.
