  • G.R.E.A.T Program, Fox Management
    June, 2010
Fox Management is a proud supporter of the Gang Resistance Education and Training (G.R.E.A.T.) Program, a school-based curriculum taught by law enforcement officers. G.R.E.A.T. reduces the rates of youth violence and gang membership in the local community, while encouraging the growth of beneficial relationships that engage children in healthy alternatives. Primarily a life-skills program, G.R.E.A.T. teaches children how to resolve problems without relying on violence through four different programs that target students of different ages and their families. Family is a key component of the G.R.E.A.T. curriculum, which acknowledges the crucial role that family members play in keeping children out of dangerous situations. The primary G.R.E.A.T. training program is aimed at middle school students, but an interrelated program designed to instill positive attitudes and behaviors in elementary school students is also an important part of the curriculum. The G.R.E.A.T. program traversed American boundaries in 2007 when a G.R.E.A.T. Officer Training program was held in Puerto Rico, adding substantially to the number of instructors. This past year, the San Juan Municipal Police carried out the G.R.E.A.T. program without any outside funding, a marker of the program’s growth and success in Puerto Rico. As a direct result of the G.R.E.A.T. program, 105 Puerto Rican middle school students recently conducted a group clean-up of their school, repainting the cafeteria, planting new trees and flowers, and erasing any marks of gangs or related violence previously found in the school. These children have been empowered to put their foot down and stop the spread of needless violence, an inspirational and encouraging feat. In the two decades since its inception, G.R.E.A.T. has made an immeasurable impact on urban areas across the United States and beyond. G.R.E.A.T. marks an important step in the right direction toward the eventual erasure of gangs and youth violence in the United States and other countries around the world.
