  • Film Review: Single Room Furnished
    November, 2010
    by Frank Ferruccio

Some candles seem to burn forever, while others are extinguished just as they truly begin to glow. In 1968, Crown International Pictures released Single Room Furnished, which featured actress Jayne Mansfield’s final performance one year after her untimely death in an automobile accident. In the film, Jayne Mansfield plays Johnnie, a woman impregnated and abandoned by her husband. Seeking to start over, Johnnie adopts a new name, Mae, as well as a new paramour. When that relationship turns sour, Johnnie/Mae creates a third persona: Eileen the prostitute, a manifestation of Johnnie’s lowest, darkest hour. More than just names, Johnnie, Mae, and Eileen are infused with unique personalities thanks to Mansfield’s phenomenal talent. Many critics agree that Single Room Furnished features Mansfield’s best performance, showcasing her ability to bring wildly different characters to life. Mansfield herself enjoyed playing the three-women-in-one character, citing Single Room Furnished as her opportunity to prove her aptitude for dramatic acting. Before Single Room Furnished begins, Jayne Mansfield’s friend, Walter Winchell, speaks to audiences about Mansfield’s life and the ground she broke as a successful Hollywood actress. Winchell’s moving words are a testament to the fact that Mansfield was more than a successful celebrity; she was a loving mother, a talented and intelligent artist, and, most of all, a woman beloved by those who knew her.

  • Pink Palace, Frank Ferruccio

Known for her bubbly personality and glowing film presence, actress Jayne Mansfield led both a rich professional and personal life. A bright and charismatic individual, Jayne Mansfield gained a great deal of recognition for the mansion she bought and decorated called The Pink Palace.

Jayne Mansfield bought the 40-room property on Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles in 1957 and set out to create a bright, fantastical space for her and her husband, former Mr. Universe Mickey Hargitay.

Designed by architect GG McAllister, The Pink Palace comprised 10,000 square feet and featured a bar, library, wine cellar, and staff suite, as well as seven bedrooms and eight bathrooms. Determined to create a lush and luxurious home, Mansfield set about requesting materials from a host of furniture and decoration suppliers. The stunning end result was an almost entirely pink home with heart-shaped swimming pools, fireplaces, and bathtubs, laid out amid lush wall-to-wall pink carpet.

A symbol of luxury, The Pink Palace gained global recognition and countless tourist snapped photographs of the cupid-studded gate. After Jayne Mansfield sold the lavish home in 1967, many other celebrities owned it, among them Ringo Starr of The Beatles and rock and roll legend Mama Cass Elliott.

While the mansion was demolished in 2002, its legacy remains a reminder of the bygone era of screen legend Jayne Mansfield, remaining as one of the most famous celebrity homes in modern history.
