  • The Pygmy Date Palm
    September, 2011
    by Frank Puentes

The pygmy date palm (Phoenix roebelenii) is native to southeastern Asia and can be grown in United States Department of Agriculture hardiness zones 8b to 11. The palm is a moderate to slow grower that can reach heights of up to 12 feet, though 7 to 10 foot plants are more common. The spread of the palm at maturity is 5 to 10 feet, with an irregular, open crown. The tree’s long, feather-like leaves grow to about 4 feet in length with 8 to 12 inch leaf blades. Sharp, long spines line the base of its leaf stems and can cause serious injury to humans and pets.

Phoenix roebelenii is an often-used landscaping favorite and can be planted by itself, though it is also very attractive when bedded in groups of three or more. The date palm makes a great indoor or deck plant and thrives in containers or planters.

The palm does not change hue in the fall, but it does produce small, cream-colored flowers. Females of the species also display round, red to purple-black fruits. Pygmy date palms grown indoors should be located in the sunniest area in the home, while outdoor plants can be located in partial shade to full sun. The palm grows best in well-drained, moist soils, though it does have some drought tolerance once it reaches maturity. Pygmy date palms are propagated by seed.
