  • Huntington Beach’s Surf City USA Marathon, Frank Shamoo
    September, 2010
Each year, the city of Huntington Beach, California, hosts Surf City Run, Surf City USA Marathon and half-marathon events. Frank Shamoo enjoys participating in the marathon. The marathon, which is limited to 2,000 runners, takes participants along an oceanfront course that passes the Huntington Beach Pier and cuts through Huntington Central Park. Runners also cross Bolsa Chica State Beach, one of Southern California’s most celebrated surfing locations. Thousands gather around the marathon route each year to cheer on the participants, making the event one of the most successful in the country. Participants start shortly before sunrise and the event is limited to six hours, pushing athletes to perform at their peak. The Surf City USA Half Marathon follows an award-winning course that is widely regarded as the most scenic in the country. The event, which draws runners nationwide, starts on the Pacific Coast Highway. The course takes participants by the Huntington Beach Pier and the Bolsa Chica Wetlands before turning down Huntington Beach’s Main Street toward the finish line. Runners are grouped into classes according to their predicted finish times and each class is started in two- to three-minute intervals, spacing out participants and placing them with other runners who will be similarly paced. As with a full marathon, half-marathon participants are limited to six hours. The Surf City USA event also hosts a 5-kilometer run along Pacific Coast Highway, which is a perfect way to stay involved, but finish in time to support those running the half and full marathons. In addition, there is a Kids Run for children under age 12.
