About Attention Deficit Disorders in Children, by Dr. Fred Norris
June, 2011
A licensed child, marriage, and family counselor, Dr. Fred Norris has applied his extensive experience in working with adults and children at his psychology practice since 1978. In the same year that Dr. Fred Norris decided to start his private practice, he acted as a Consulting Psychologist for a county-funded child development program that served children with development, behavioral, and learning disabilities. Dr. Fred Norris also presented a lecture on attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in adolescents and young adults. He has since worked with several children and young adults with ADHD and attention deficit disorder (ADD). Individuals who have issues applying themselves to a certain subject for a long period of time, act on impulsive whims, exhibit a high level of hyperactivity, and are unable to focus their attention may have ADD, which serves as a subjective description of these conditions.
While a child with ADD may demonstrate a lack of concentration when completing schoolwork or some other activity, there is usually another factor that signifies ADD. Sometimes, attention deficit children are gifted, but they find it hard to apply themselves during school and receive bad grades. Individuals with ADD can exhibit the condition and presence with or without hyperactivity. Diagnostic procedures for ADD have changed over the years with due to new research and other factors. Traditionally, inattentive children must meet six criteria in order to possess ADD. They forget about daily routines, have trouble listening, lack organizational skills, lose important information or objects, and have problems with homework and school assignments. They lack the ability to finish projects or schoolwork, focus on details, struggle to focus on the task at hand, and have a difficult time in finishing work and/or following instructions. It is unknown why some children experience these issues.
