Gary D. Herwitz: Evaluating Success in Turnaround Management, Gary D. Herwitz
May, 2011
Managing Partner Gary D. Herwitz of CoMetrics Partners LLC works to help clients realize profit maximization, restructuring, and business process turnaround. A number of factors can be used to measure the success of a turnaround effort. CoMetrics employs these principles to determine the financial health of client companies and ensure that they have effectively returned to profitability.
One of the most important measures of turnaround success is the attitude of lenders and investors. Companies in distressed positions often turn to complex financial reporting in order to paint a rosier picture to potential lenders and investors. Yet lenders will approach distressed firms more cautiously and prefer to see clearer financial reports. Once clear, unambiguous financial reporting can attract a few key lenders and investors, the company is likely to have turned the corner toward stability.
Industry-specific performance indicators coupled with financial metrics also help to determine whether or not a turnaround has been successful. For each company, CoMetrics employs slightly different performance indicators, but always measures that reflect the core business of the firm. In addition, instead of looking at EBITDA or other standard metrics appropriate to stable companies, in a turnaround simpler measures such as gross margin provide a better picture of the financial health of the company. Gross margin, combined with key sector-specific indicators of positive performance, show that the underlying problems have been solved. EBITDA on the other hand can be used to mask problems through tax breaks or depreciation incentives related to a poor financial outlook.
Elimination of unprofitable activities also signals turnaround success. If the company has solved its underlying problems, smaller revenues often result simply because sales from unprofitable business units have disappeared. Yet the savings realized through divestitures more than offset the decrease in revenues while also reassuring investors that the company will not repeat the same mistakes twice.
Combined with our Profit Maximization strategies, CoMetrics turnaround management has helped many companies return from the brink to realize a healthy return on investment. To learn more, visit us online at www.cometricspartners.com.

Volunteer Opportunities at Big Brothers Big Sisters of New York City, Gary D. Herwitz
June, 2011
In addition to his work as an accomplished financial professional and current Managing Partner of CoMetrics Partners LLC, Gary D. Herwitz served on the board of the finance chapter of Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) of New York City. Founded in 1904 in Lower Manhattan, BBBS of NYC initially set out to provide mentoring services to young children facing reformatory sentences. The organization draws on a rich history of volunteer work, whereby members of the community donate their time to preserving the futures of children in New York City. Here is a brief overview of some of the volunteer opportunities available at BBBS of NYC.
Become a Big: The primary activity of BBBS of NYC, the Big Brothers and Big Sisters program draws upon volunteers who have a vested interest in the welfare of young people and the ability to relate to them in an effective way. Mentors have a tremendous potential to exert a positive influence on children, who are significantly less likely to start drinking, using illegal drugs, skipping school, and engaging in violent behavior when they have a Big Brother or Big Sister.
Young Professionals Committee: Founded more than a decade ago by a group of young professionals who later went on to become members of the BBBS of NYC Board of Directors, the Young Professionals Committee (YPC) works to raise money for BBBS of NYC. Fundraising events in the past have included happy hours, book signings, and wine tasting. The YPC also organizes the Gridiron Games at Giants Stadium and the casino-style Big Night Out, two of the largest fundraisers for BBBS of NYC.
Bigs and Littles Chorus: Established in 2003 by Danny Madden, The Bigs and Littles Chorus and Friends is a musical program that provides children and their Bigs the opportunity to perform in musical productions. The Chorus delivers annual performances at the Accountants and Bankers Reception, Race for the Kids, and Casino Jazz Night Real Estate Dinner, three of the largest BBBS of NYC events.
Latino Bigs: A part of the BBBS of NYC organization, the Latino Bigs program pairs adult volunteers with children in Latino communities. The program hosts a number of unique events at historic Latino venues, organizes comedy nights and bar parties, and sponsors the Step Up to the Plate softball fundraiser.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of New York City’s Community-Based Mentoring Programs, by Gary D. Herwitz
April, 2012
As a longtime New York City resident, I passionately support organizations and efforts aimed at making my city a better place. Today, I serve as Managing Partner of a corporate consultancy I founded, CoMetrics Partners LLC but in the past I held positions on the finance boards of nonprofits World ORT and Big Brothers Big Sisters of New York City. I continue to donate to both associations to ensure they are able to maintain their community programs.
Part of a nationwide mentoring association, Big Brothers Big Sisters of New York City operates as one of Big Brothers Big Sisters of America’s largest and most active chapters. Like all Big Brothers Big Sisters groups, the New York City branch pairs adult volunteer mentors, called Bigs, with adolescents and young adults, called Littles, to help the latter find positive interests and lead healthy social lives. To date, Big Brothers Big Sisters has achieved notable results in making youths less likely to use drugs, drink alcohol, or skip school, according to professional studies.
Big Brothers Big Sisters of New York City operates several unique programs, including traditional mentoring in Manhattan, The Bronx, Brooklyn, and Queens. The nonprofit’s primary program serves youths between the ages of 7 and 18 from low-income, single-parent homes. Bigs and Littles participate in planned activities or events every other week and stay in touch via the telephone in the interim.
Big Brothers Big Sisters of New York City’s Juvenile Justice Mentoring program targets at-risk youths involved in the judicial system, helping them lead productive lives and refrain from future criminal activity. Combining case management with one-on-one mentoring, the juvenile justice program almost always results in fewer infractions and better school performance. Learn more at http://www.bigsnyc.org .
