Gum Grafts Correct Receding Gum Problems (Part 1) By Dr. Gary Perlman , Gary Perlman's Blog on Bigsight
August, 2011
In healthy mouths, gums fit snugly along the bottom of the teeth, protecting the sensitive roots. Some individuals, however, exhibit receding gums that increase the likelihood that they will develop gum disease. Gum recession causes the soft tissue to erode, exposing more of the tooth root. The tissue no longer adheres closely to the tooth, opening up pockets that are extremely vulnerable to harmful bacteria. These bacteria secrete acids that wear away at teeth, triggering decay and tooth loss. For those who undergo regular dental cleanings and exams, dentists usually catch gum recession early enough to treat the condition. As such, it makes sense to visit a dentist twice a year to ensure long-term oral health. Periodontists can successfully treat gum recession with minimal recovery time for the patient.
Gum recession can occur for a number of reasons. Periodontal disease, which damages the gum tissue as well as the jaw bones in which the roots of the teeth are anchored, tends to be the most prevalent cause. Genetic factors also affect the health of gums. As many as 30 percent of people carry genes that predispose them to gum recession, even if they practice excellent oral hygiene. Ironically, being too aggressive in caring for teeth can also lead to gum recession. When teeth are brushed too hard, it causes wear and tear on the gums that can strip away delicate gum tissue.

Conversely, inadequate dental care also causes gum recession. Without sufficient brushing and flossing, plaque builds up on the teeth. It turns into calculus also known as tartar, a hard substance that coats the surfaces of teeth and accumulates between them. This coating provides an excellent breeding ground for bacteria that can cause gum recession, decay, and disease. Tobacco products exacerbate problems with plaque, making smokers more vulnerable to these problems even if they do brush and floss regularly.
Women often experience gum recession because of hormone fluctuations during puberty, menopause, and pregnancy. These changes sensitize the gums and increase the possibility that a woman’s gums will recede. Problems with functionality or alignment also lead to gum recession. Grinding or clenching teeth places excessive pressure on them that can cause gums to recede. The same problem occurs in patients who have misaligned teeth or an uneven bite. The uneven force of teeth coming together at unfavorable angles causes chips and cracks and can put too much stress on the jaw bones and gums.
