  • Skyline Capital Management: Utilizing Asset Management Systems to Mitigate Risk, Geoffrey VanderPal
    February, 2011

As founder and Chief Investment Officer of Skyline Capital Management, Dr. Geoffrey VanderPal provides clients with superior investment strategies, designed to protect principal values. The patent pending VanderPal Method ™ and the related Principal Preservation Index Programs together form a core structure to protect assets in volatile economic times.

Having analyzed a full decade’s worth of financial markets data before developing these products, the firm now offers them to a select group of registered investment advisors, as well as pension funds and institutions in the public and private sectors. Pension systems nationwide face serious problems, with the Manhattan Institute for Policy Research reporting in 2008 that states’ public-pension systems face $3 trillion in shortfalls. Although the sum of the states’ own total reported shortfalls is less than $500 billion, these projections rely on unrealistic investment gain expectations. Instead of taking sensible steps to mitigate market risk, the managers of public pension funds may be utilizing outmoded asset allocation strategies that risk shrinking retirement capital. Indeed, since that 2008 report, returns reported by financial advisors have been trending further downward, suggesting significant losses and less cash inflow in many classes of invested assets.

Utilizing the VanderPal Method ™ and Principal Preservation Index Programs, pension fund managers could have reduced the liabilities inflicted by market fluctuations. Through our proprietary system, clients may achieve capital gains regardless of whether markets trend positively or negatively. Under this system, we place 95 percent to 100 percent of principal in U.S. government-issued short-term notes and FDIC-insured bank certificates of deposit (CDs).

In addition, money managers continually reinvest earnings into clients’ principals, regularly securing capital in a “ratchet effect.” The VanderPal Method ™ thus offers substantial security advantages as compared with traditional indexed annuities, structured notes and products, and indexed CDs. In addition to generating significant market risk, these vehicles often have fees and penalties associated with early withdrawal, substantial tax liabilities, and no means of locking in investment gains on a periodic basis.
