We offer several types of plants at FTD.com in addition to our festive bouquets and arrangements. One of the most unique plant offerings in our collection remains the bonsai tree. Ranging in price from $35 to $790, our bonsai trees offer elegance in their simplicity, rooted in the Eastern Asian tradition.

Although the origins of bonsai remain shrouded in mystery, one legend has it that in the Han Dynasty of 200 B.C., an emperor built a scale model of his empire in his garden, complete with replicated mountains, lakes, and miniature bonsai trees. The earliest documentation of bonsai occurs in paintings dating from 600 A.D., discovered in the tomb of Prince Zhang Huai of the Tang Dynasty in 1972.

Bonsai remain associated with the Japanese culture, transported from China to Japan during the Heian period, which lasted from 800 A.D. to 1200 A.D. Limited to the noble classes during the early years, bonsai eventually spread to common households around the 14th century. The Japanese gradually refined bonsai into a much more intricate art than its Chinese predecessor, developing precise techniques for shaping different trees that form the basis of bonsai as practiced today.

In 1878, bonsai earned an introduction to the West at the Third Universal Exhibition, held in Paris. In 1909, the first large exhibit dedicated to bonsai took place in London and interest in the tree steadily grew. Bonsai grew in popularity in America following the return of WWII soldiers, who brought the miniature trees home as souvenirs. Today bonsai trees endure in popularity as popular gift items for any season. We offer a wide variety of bonsai plants at FTD.com, including the Fukien tea, Hawaiian umbrella tree, ficus, juniper, blooming azalea, and even the Ponytail Palm.
