Plastic surgeon Dr. Gottfried Lemperle has accrued over 40 years of experience in the field of medicine. Employing his wealth of expertise, he currently serves as a Voluntary Clinical Professor at the University of California, San Diego, a position he has held since 1998. Dr. Lemperle is also the Chief Medical Advisor of Hafod Bioscience B.V. and Chief Medical Officer of AscentX Medical, Inc. After earning a medical degree in Germany, Dr. Lemperle completed a year-long medical internship and pursued a two-year fellowship in immunology at Yale University. He returned to Germany to become the Chief of the Division of Experimental Surgery at the University of Freiburg. In 1971, Gottfried Lemperle joined the University of Frankfurt as Chief Resident in Plastic Surgery. In 1974, he completed his Ph.D. thesis investigating host resistance in burn patients. He then began teaching at the university as a clinical professor of surgery and served as Chief of the Department of Plastic Surgery. While at the University of Frankfurt, Dr. Lemperle developed new operational methods that included the treatments for facial palsy, breast reconstruction, and cleft lip and palate correction. Dr. Gottfried Lemperle founded Interplast Germany eV in 1979, offering free plastic surgery to individuals in developing nations who have hand, skin, or facial malformations. Dr. Lemperle has embarked on 31 missions to Asian and African countries through the organization, and he continues to serve as an honorary member of Interplast. Earning recognition for his work, Dr. Lemperle received Germany’s Order of Merit, which is the highest tribute the country can give to individuals for valuable service to society in 1997. In 2000, he was given a Pro-Sina-Award for outstanding breast cancer surgery, and in 2005, he received the Herbert-Hoehler-Needle Lifetime Award for exceptional developments in aesthetic surgery. Dr. Lemperle also earned the Dieffenbach Medal from the German Society of Plastic, Reconstructive, and Aesthetic Surgeons in 2010 for outstanding achievements in plastic surgery.
