Grant Allen is Vice President of ABB Technology Ventures (ATV), the venture capital arm of ABB, Inc. (NYSE: ABB), a global leader in power and automation technologies. Headquartered in Zurich, with offices in Silicon Valley and Washington, D.C., ATV invests in high potential energy technology companies which can benefit from ABB’s technology development resources and global market access. ATV has invested over $120 million into a wide range of sectors including renewable energy generation, smart grid, cyber security, energy efficiency, power infrastructure, and data center management software.

Mr. Allen sits on the Board of Directors of GreenVolts, a concentrated photovoltaic systems company, and of Validus DC Systems, a developer of novel DC power supply systems for the datacenter. He is also an Observer on the Board of Directors of Industrial Defender, a cyber security services company focused on critical infrastructure and industrial control systems.

Previously, Mr. Allen was a Vice President with Core Capital Partners, a Washington, D.C.-based venture capital firm with $350 million under management. There, he led investments in enterprise software, mobile, communications infrastructure and greentech. In addition to working closely with Infinite Power Solutions, Mobo Systems, Univa, and buySAFE, he was on the Steering Committee for the Mid-Atlantic Venture Association’s (MAVA) Capital Connection, on the board of MobileMonday DC, and actively involved with the MIT Enterprise Forum.

Prior to becoming a venture capitalist, Mr. Allen worked at Microsoft Corporation as a Product Manager in the Mobile & Embedded Devices division and at Jingle Networks, a mobile directory assistance service (1-800-FREE-411) backed by First Round Capital and Goldman Sachs and sold for $63 million to Marchex. He was previously a strategy consultant at Dean & Company, a data modeler in the Environmental & Product Liability practice of Bates White, and a consultant to a number of other start-ups including Intellistream, Nextera Interactive, in addition to co-founding A-k Presence, a web design and IT consulting firm, as an engineering undergraduate.

Outside of work, Mr. Allen is on the Board of Directors of the L’Enfant Society for the Trust for the National Mall and Chairman of the Ocular Melanoma Foundation, a non-profit cancer research and advocacy group he founded in 2003. He oversees a small seed investment fund, Keybridge Venture Partners, which has interests in eight fast growth start-ups, and lectures on entrepreneurial finance, corporate venturing and term sheet negotiation at Georgetown’s McDonough School of Business and Georgetown Law.

He holds a BSE in civil and environmental engineering with honors from Duke University’s Pratt School of Engineering with a minor in economics and an MBA from The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania where he was on the board of the Wharton Alumni Association, an assistant to Dr. Sarah Kaplan, and a Citi Foundation Leadership Fellow.
