Greg Muzzillo possesses more than 30 years of experience in branding through his company Proforma

Independence, Ohio

With more than three decades of success to their names, Greg P. Muzzillo and his graphic-communications and promotional-products company, Proforma, stand as proof that small businesses can flourish in the United States. In 1978, with only $200 in pocket, Mr. Muzzillo and a partner founded Proforma. Fewer than 10 years later, the company was earning approximately $5 million in revenue each year and had won the honor of being named U.S. Small Business of the Year by President Ronald Reagan. Shortly thereafter, Mr. Muzzillo restructured the company, employing a franchise model and paving the way for surging growth to come.

In addition to the adoption of the franchise model, the company experienced another major, positive chance when Vera Muzzillo joined the executive leadership team as Co-Chief Executive Officer with Greg P. Muzzillo in 2001. The company saw significant increases in revenue following her arrival; to date, company earnings have risen by approximately $200 million since Ms. Muzzillo came on board. At present, she serves as sole CEO, while Greg P. Muzzillo stays on as Founder. The extraordinary success of this husband-and-wife executive team recently earned recognition from Counselor magazine, which granted the couple the publication’s Person of the Year award for 2010.

  • An Interview with Greg Muzzillo about the Accomplishments of Proforma
    , Gregory P. Muzzillo's Blog on Bigsight
    November, 2011
Recently, I spoke with Greg Muzzillo, the founder of Proforma, about the many achievements of his company. Built in 1978, Performa stands on the forefront of graphic communications by selling promotional products, e-commerce solutions, total project management, and multimedia options, among other services. Over the past three decades, Greg Muzzillo and Proforma have garnered recognition from premier industry groups.

    Q. Mr. Muzzillo, what were some of your first honors?

    A. One of the most memorable moments of my life occurred early in my career. In 1985, when my firm was only 7 years old, I became one of the winners of the U.S. Small Business of the Year award. As part of this honor, I attended a celebration at the White House Rose Garden where I shook hands with then-President Ronald Reagan.

    Q. What about more recently?

A.Throughout the 2000s, we received a host of accolades. A banner year for the company, for me, and for Vera, my wife and Proforma’s Chief Executive Officer, was 2007, when both of us were finalists for the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award and included on Counselor magazine’s list of the Top 10 Most Influential in the Promotional Products Industry. In addition, Counselor named her as its 2006 Woman of Distinction and the National Association of Women Business Owners of Cleveland chose her as one of the Top 10 Women Business Owners of Northeast Ohio. Proforma itself acquired a Northeast Ohio Success Award; a Grand PEAK Award in Print Solutions magazine’s Complex Self-Promotion category; and the title of best Business Services Franchise from Entrepreneur magazine, which it has earned several times.

    Q. Has this success continued into the 2010s?

    A. Definitely. This year alone we ranked as the number one Top Distributor for Promo Marketing magazine, as well as topping Entrepreneur magazine’s Business Services category. Counselor selected us as second best distributor while Print Solutions magazine placed us as third. However, Print Solutions awarded us with a PEAK Award of Excellence for our Portfolio Program, and Crain’s Cleveland Business News considered us the leading EDGE company. Additionally, Graphic Design USA provided us with an American Inhouse Design Award for Proforma’s “Better Together” 2011 calendar and “Connect the Dots” campaign.
