Professor, Vice Chairman - Stanford UniversityRedwood City, CaliforniaA highly respected clinical neurosurgeon, educator and administrator, Dr. Griff Harsh is an accomplished academician. After graduating as valedictorian of his high school class in 1971, Dr. Harsh earned a National Merit Scholarship and enrolled in an A.B. program at Harvard University, where he received the prestigious Harvard National Scholarship. Dr. Harsh as an undergraduate at Harvard, was awarded the Freshman Scholarship Prize and earned a place on the dean’s list four years in a row. Dr. Harsh graduated summa cum laude, concentrating in Biology and was inducted into the Phi Beta Kappa academic honor society after his junior year. After attending Oxford University for three years on a Rhodes Scholarship, Dr. Griff Harsh returned to Massachusetts to work toward an M.D. at Harvard Medical School. In 1980, Dr. Harsh completed a one-year internship in surgery at the University of California, San Francisco before beginning his residency in neurological surgery in 1981 at the same school. Dr. Harsh excelled during his residency, earning two research fellowships and became a Diplomat of the National Board of Medical Examiners. After completing his residency, Dr. Griff Harsh began his academic and teaching career, accepting an offer to become a Clinical Instructor in neurological surgery at UCSF. He soon garnered a promotion to the position of Assistant Professor of Neurological Surgery. He was awarded the Harold Rosegay Award for Excellence in Resident Teaching in 1990. Two years later, Dr. Griff Harsh returned to his alma mater to become an Associate Professor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School. In 1998, Dr. Griff Harsh returned to the San Francisco Bay Area to become a Professor of Neurosurgery at Stanford Medical School. Shortly thereafter, Dr. Harsh became Program Director of the Neurosurgery Residency Training Program and Co-Director of the Pituitary Center at Stanford Medical Center. After serving as a Professor of Neurosurgery for eight years, he became the Vice Chairman in the Department of Neurosurgery at Stanford Medical School. In addition to his various professorial and administrative positions at Stanford Medical School, he also serves as a mentor and Director of Clinical Neurosurgical Courses and Clerkships.
