Beginning in November 1991, financial and banking professional Herbert Wigwe served Lagos, Nigeria-based Guaranty Trust Bank PLC in numerous ways. After earning his M.A. in Banking and Finance from the University College of North Wales (now Bangor University) and completing an Associate Chartered Accountant (ACA) certificate from the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria, Herbert Wigwe entered Guaranty Trust Bank PLC as Deputy Manager in the Corporate Bank division. With a wide range of responsibilities, Herbert Wigwe demonstrated his proficiency in overseeing company operations. As a manager in the bank’s Textile Unit, Herbert Wigwe handled the identification and acquisition of new clients, evaluation of risk for loans within the department’s portfolio, client outreach, product development, and budget reports. An effective teacher and trainer as well, Herbert Wigwe ensured the proper professional development of all employees in his division.

In May 1993, Guaranty Trust Bank PLC promoted Herbert Wigwe to Manager of the Corporate Bank division. Herbert Wigwe performed additional duties as Head of the Conglomerates Unit in this new role, in addition to preparing overall strategic plans, supervising the marketing of new accounts, and monitoring yearly budgets. Guaranty Trust Bank again increased Herbert Wigwe’s role at the company in 1996, when they named him Assistant General Manager and Head of the Energy Group. For the next two years, Herbert Wigwe focused his attention on the continued growth of businesses involved in the energy sector, establishing lasting relationships with important figures in the industry and serving as architect of his team’s strategic direction.

As a result of his strong record in the Energy Group, Herbert Wigwe received an additional promotion to Deputy General Manager and Head of the Institutional Banking Group in May 1999. In this dual post, Herbert Wigwe worked in the highest-earning division of Guaranty Trust Bank PLC, maintaining its status through the development of growth opportunities, quality assurance, and considerable risk management. Herbert Wigwe eventually rose to become Executive Director of Guaranty Trust Bank PLC in December 1999. Herbert Wigwe who is also an alumnus of the Harvard Business School, currently serves Access Bank PLC in a variety of executive functions.
