Hyland Stokes, Founder and Managing Partner of The Pam Group LLC, laid the foundation for his successful career in financial management and retirement planning through rigorous academic work at the University of Wisconsin. As one of the largest, public higher education systems in the United States, the University of Wisconsin (UW) System comprises 13 four-year universities and 13 freshman-sophomore campuses, in addition to the statewide UW-Extension. In 2010, nearly 182,000 students and more than 32,000 faculty members make up the UW community, and the university system operates on an annual budget of $4.75 billion, of which $1.1 billion represents state funding. As the UW System’s flagship campus, the University of Wisconsin-Madison hosts more than 42,000 of the System’s total enrolled students.

A public research university, UW-Madison falls into the RU/VH (Research Universities/very high research activity) category in the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education, and the university’s research spending exceeded $1 billion in 2010. In addition to an exceptional research facility and community, UW-Madison also boasts a rich history of successful athletic programs. Competing in 22 intercollegiate sports in the NCAA’s Division I Big Ten Conference, UW-Madison holds 35 national championship titles that the institution earned since its first day of instruction 160-plus years ago. In the same year that Wisconsin became a state, its first governor, Nelson Dewey, signed an incorporation act on July 26, 1848, founding the University of Wisconsin-Madison. However, the origin of the University of Wisconsin dates back even further. In 1838, the legislature of the Wisconsin Territory passed a bill to establish a University of Wisconsin in or near Madison. Over the years, the University of Wisconsin dramatically grew in size and consequence, and today, the institution proudly holds the title of one of the nation’s top public universities.
