Professional Photographers of America (PPA), Ilana Ben Harav
December, 2010
By: Ilana Ben Harav
As a successful wedding photographer, I am a longstanding member of the Professional Photographers of America (PPA). Founded in 1880, PPA currently has over 20,000 members around the world. PPA is a uniquely active association, finding ways to advance members’ creative scope and careers through education, awards, and community resources. PPA provides a comprehensive set of educational services, encompassing workshops, webinars, and PPA affiliate schools. In order to learn more about their field, photographers are able to access a diverse range of weekly webinars, including the Beyond the Camera series, which focuses on a variety of compositional techniques, and the Focus on Specialties series, which covers photography business models and marketing strategies. Physical two-day and three-day workshops are generally held at the PPA’s headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia, as well as in San Antonio, Texas. Some PPA business workshops even cover specific fields, such as wedding photography. PPA holds various competitions each year, including the prestigious International Photographic Competition. Entered submissions are judged relative to PPA’s “12 Elements of a Merit Print,” and winning a category leads to wider recognition among the international photographic community. There is also an electronic imaging competition geared towards those who are pursuing a PPA Master of Electronic Imaging Degree. One of the things that attracts me to PPA is the forums and galleries section, which provides a way for professional photographers to connect online and trade techniques, tips, and critiques. The PPA also performs valuable work on behalf of photographers at the industry level, advocating for copyright protection and supporting or opposing bills in the U.S. Congress and Senate. For more information on how to get involved with the Professional Photographers of America, visit the organization’s website at www.ppa.com .
