Triathlon Training for Beginners, By Jaime Murra
April, 2012
With several Ironman triathlons under his belt, Jaime Murra understands the rigors and discipline involved in training for such an event. In this article, Murra covers the basics to get you started on any training program along with some helpful tips so you can maximize your ability to perform.
Because an Ironman triathlon is so intense, featuring a 2.4-mile swimming leg, a 112-mile biking leg, and a marathon run of 26.2 miles, the ideal trainee will already have several Olympic distance competitions under his or her belt, or even a half-Ironman.
There are a variety of training programs, all tailored toward athletes of different ages and abilities. While some Ironman triathletes stress an intense weekly workout regimen, this is often unrealistic for people who have other commitments and need a more balanced schedule. It is helpful, however, to have a base of endurance from another sport such as running, cycling, or swimming, which will give you a leg up in at least one of the disciplines. One of the more difficult aspects of Ironman training is building up endurance in a leg that is unfamiliar to you. Some trainers use a technique called periodization for athletes who may need more work in one of the other disciplines. Periodization allows athletes to build endurance over a period of time, followed by cycles of rest and recovery. Typically, these cycles involve two weeks of training, followed by a week of downtime, followed by increased intensity training.
As race day approaches, athletes train for longer distances in each leg, but rarely will they actually complete the entirety of a run or bike in its Ironman distance. Instead, they often will train to approach 26.2 miles in a run or 112 miles on a bike, but stop just short.
Of course, maintaining a good diet is also important to maximizing race potential. Athletes may expect to lose a couple of pounds during Ironman training, and trust in the fact that they may always be eager for a frequent snack during training.
