About James Enstrom

Los Angeles, California

He has served on the UCLA faculty since 1976. A well-respected educator and epidemiologist, Dr. Enstrom works as a Research Professor at the UCLA School of Public Health and Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center. Enstrom conducted his doctoral studies at Stanford University and received postdoctoral training in cancer epidemiology and public health from UCLA. His career research has focused on examining how factors, such as environment and lifestyle choices, impact the rates of developing major chronic diseases, with a focus on cancer.

Dr. Enstrom was nearly 40 years of experience in epidemiology and in precise research methods. His studies defining the factors causing cancer have appeared in numerous peer-reviewed academic journals and government officials have considered the results as critical evidence in determining air quality regulations. During his career, Dr. Enstrom has conducted pivotal studies into the causes of various types of cancer and other diseases. His prior work with Nobel Prize-winning scientists has help guide his approach to epidemiology and his emphasis on rigorous methodology and objective evaluation of research data.

Clearly defining the impact of smoking and air pollution on disease development has been become the focus of Dr. Enstrom’s current research. Through the course of his public health studies, Enstrom has focused on examining well-defined sample groups to explore the impact of environmental factors like fine particulate air pollution. He has published the largest and most comprehensive study to date on the relationship between fine particulate matter and total mortality in California.

Dr. Enstrom’s research findings and his data analysis expertise have been sought after to augment the heated discussions concerning significant air quality issues. Beyond simply publishing his findings, Enstrom was inspired to assume an active role in promoting objective data evaluation in the process of formulating and implementing regulations that have major economic and political consequences. He is highly vocal in his efforts to encourage regulatory boards like the California Air Resources Board to ensure that research findings undisputedly justify new regulatory intervention on air pollutants such as fine particulate matter.
