    October, 2011
An annual event, the Global Activism Expo grew from the Global Activism Series and now gathers hundreds of individuals from around the Chicago area eager to show individuals how they can get involved with several different important efforts. The free event brings in people of all ages from the surrounding community, demonstrating to them how the smallest contribution can effect the greatest change. At the event, people learn about the various battles now waged around the world for human rights, access to education and proper food, freedom from oppression, and other similar goals. This year’s event represented work in more than 100 countries and projects as diverse as buying cows for families in Kenya to providing for human trafficking victims in Vietnam. Other initiatives provide for those in need around the world, shipping bicycles, school supplies, medications, and other necessities.

This year, as in years past, the Hospital Sisters Mission Outreach (HSMO) collected items for hygiene kits from those in attendance and asked that individuals donate a small portion of their time to actually assemble a kit. The organization ships these items to the underserved throughout the world and has recently concentrated primarily on those still without the basic necessities after the tsunami in Japan. The United States Navy requested that HSMO collect and assemble such kits for distribution there. Outside of providing needed items, the organization also encourages crosscultural interaction and creates important awareness programming.

I have donated significant time to the Global Activism Expo in the past, an initiative just as important as all the projects presented during the event. Witnessing the atmosphere of excitement and hope that the Expo fosters never fails to encourage my own activist side. I enjoy seeing how the Expo forges a real sense of community among those in the Chicago area while clearly demonstrating the power of teamwork and a collective will. The Expo takes place at the University of Illinois at Chicago Forum each spring, sponsored by
    WBEZ-Chicago.
