As people age, their skin acquires a number of blemishes from the sun, acne, scarring, or the natural wrinkling process. Dermal Optical Thermolysis (DOT) Therapy uses pulses of laser energy to reverse the appearance of those blemishes. The process is quickly replacing older laser skin resurfacing techniques because of its ability to provide outstanding results with minimal downtime.
DOT Therapy’s laser provides skin tightening and collagen growth by burning thousands of tiny holes in the skin. Unlike other laser treatments, however, it leaves areas of healthy skin surrounding the microscopic holes it creates, minimizing damage and enabling a patient to heal in a short period of time. Patients are often surprised by how quickly they can feel the results of the treatment.
After the procedure, a patient’s skin will take on a redness similar to that caused by a sunburn. The redness persists for a short time and three or four days after completing the procedure, patients will experience some peeling. Generally, skin returns to a fresher, normal-looking appearance in 7 to 10 days. Patients are advised to use a hydrating lotion during their recoveries and not to apply makeup for three days.
DOT Therapy is FDA-approved and safer than traditional laser skin treatments, in part because it does not require patients to be sedated. DOT Therapy also offers doctors a great deal of control and leaves a shallower footprint than other techniques while still offering dramatic results.
