The Lymphoma Research Foundation
March, 2011
By James Wawrzewski
As Creative Director of the New York City communication design firm Ludlow6 LLC, I assist in designing of a wide variety of materials for nonprofit organizations, small to medium sized businesses, and educational institutions. One of the nonprofit organizations my firm has partnered with is the Lymphoma Research Foundation (LRF), creating a wide-range of materials from magazines, newsletters, and logos to educational handbooks and event materials. I support the LRF’s work on a personal basis as well, participating in Lymphomathon walks that raise money toward lymphoma research.
The LRF is the largest organization in the U.S. dedicated to researching and caring for those affected by lymphoma, a cancer that attacks the immune system`s lymphatic cells. Encompassing all areas of lymphoma, the LRF’s aggressive research program includes grant awards encouraging the work of clinical lymphoma researchers. LRF research funds also support initiatives specific to the four major types of the disease: chronic lymphocytic leukemia, follicular lymphoma, mantle cell lymphoma, and T-Cell lymphoma. Disease-specific programs and services also form a major component of LRFs mission, with the organization overseeing a helpline, volunteer support network, information service, workshops and educational events, and public policy advocacy initiatives.
One of the aspects of the LRF I am drawn to is its strong educational component. In particular, the North American Educational Forum on Lymphoma focuses on educating people affected by the disease and their loved ones. This three-day conference expands patients` awareness of treatment facilities and options, patient support, and breakthroughs in lymphoma research. The LRF also offers one-day regional lymphoma workshops throughout the year. Scheduled workshops this spring are taking place in Massachusetts, Arizona, and Illinois.
