Since retiring in 2004, Janet Schlarbaum has not slowed down a bit. After owning and operating her own salon, A Touch of Class, for 43 years, Janet Schlarbaum closed up shop four years ago to care for her then newborn great-grandson, Cason, while his mother attended college during the day. Always a kind, community-minded individual, Janet Schlarbaum has continued to give back to her community despite the fact that she is no longer employed. From an early age, Janet Schlarbaum has been helping those in need around her. When she first moved to the town of White Bird, ID in 1961, Janet Schlarbaum’s husband Burt was being sent to Vietnam. Then pregnant, Janet needed a way to take her worries off her mind, so she started helping neighbors by babysitting and mending clothes. Later on, after Burt had returned from the war and the Schlarbaum’s had more children, Janet Schlarbaum’s interest in community service was renewed. Mrs. Schlarbaum volunteered as a chaperone at her children’s school, baked cookies for bake sales, sewed clothing for plays and recitals, and cheered her boys’ athletic pursuits from the stands. Janet Schlarbaum was also quite active in her church and donated time, goods, and money to various church causes. Since retiring, Janet Schlarbaum continues to give back to her community. She provides free hair styling and cutting to elderly neighbors, volunteers at the local food shelf and women’s shelter, and still helps with church tag sales and food drives whenever needed.
