With an interest in historical preservation, Jeffrey Bussean keeps an eye out for potential venues. Jeffrey Bussean earned an award for his efforts in the renovation of the Patrick C. Haley Mansion, effectively saving it from demolition. Jeffrey Bussean and his company operate and coordinate events at three distinct and unique venues. The Patrick C. Haley Mansion, originally built in 1891 according to plans by architect Frank Shaver Allen in Joliet, Illinois, sits atop a hill overlooking the city. With an elegant limestone exterior and massive porches, the Mansion is an ideal setting for the weddings or parties coordinated by Jeffrey Bussean and his team. Jeffrey Bussean offers his clients the ability to host their events indoors, in the conservatory and ballroom that seat 400 guests, or outdoors, in the gorgeous Victorian gardens that feature two waterfalls and ponds. Another of Jeffrey Bussean’s venues, The Chateau Bu-Sché, also affords clients the ability to host a variety of events in a beautiful outdoor setting. With a foyer located alongside a creek complemented by roses and flowering gardens, The Chateau Bu-Sché also includes ceramic floors, an enormous fireplace, and a dining room with panoramic glass offering guests a view of the grounds and the atriums. Additionally, Jeffrey Bussean provides The Grant Ballroom at Joliet Union Station as another chic and sophisticated venue. Jeffrey Bussean maintains strong ties to the community through his involvement with the chambers of commerce in Joliet and Alsip. Musically inclined, Jeffrey Bussean serves as a Friend of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and a member of the Lyric Opera of Chicago, and he donates to both. Additionally, Jeffrey Bussean supports a variety of charities, including The Smile Train and the McCormick Foundation Hurricane Katrina Relief Campaign. In his free time, Jeffrey Bussean enjoys playing chess, cooking, and playing the guitar and the violin.

Plan USA: Assisting Children Throughout the World by Jeffrey Bussean
February, 2011
Plan USA is part of Plan International, serving children since 1937.
By Jeffrey Bussean
As President of Bussean Custom Caterers in Worth, Illinois, I feel privileged to support charities such as Plan USA, the Wounded Warrior Project, and Smile Train. Plan USA is affiliated with Plan International, a charity originally founded in 1937 as Foster Parents Plan for Children in Spain by a journalist and a refugee worker.
The organization’s mission grew to encompass assisting children throughout Europe in World War II. This objective was further expanded in the 1950s as focus shifted to providing food, housing, and education to children in developing countries. Plan International currently operates in nearly 50 nations, helping 1 million children through donations from an equivalent number of charitable donors. Plan International’s strategy for lifting boys and girls from poverty is based on eight fundamental planks: education, protection, health, economic security, emergency relief, ensuring sexual health, water and public sanitation, and child participation.
While Plan USA encourages donors to sponsor individual children, this does not imply a direct contribution to a specific youth. Rather, Plan USA pools donated resources and partners with local communities in planning long-term solutions to chronic problems. For example, Plan USA’s growth monitoring programs assist mothers of children ages one to five, ensuring nutritious diet, parental care education, and a full range of immunizations. Other Plan USA programs offer training to local health workers; vocational training to children; scholarships and assistance with school fees; home repair and construction; and agricultural development. Plan USA frequently arranges for sponsors to visit the children they assist. In addition to offering cultural exchange opportunities, the visits provide life changing moments in which sponsors and recipients reach out to form human connections.

A Few Worthwhile Causes, by Jeffrey Bussean
March, 2011
by Jeffrey Bussean
Outside of my professional life in the catering industry, I pride myself in contributing to charitable and community service activities. So many important causes vie for our support on a daily basis. I wanted to highlight a few that I find especially worthy of attention.
The Wounded Warrior Project: Under the Caregivers and Veterans Omnibus Health Services Act, signed into law in May 2010, U.S. veterans living with severe injuries, as well as their family caregivers, are to receive assistance. This support, in the form of training and monetary assistance, has been delayed repeatedly. The mission of the Wounded Warrior Project involves advocacy and lobbying on behalf of veterans with disabilities and their caregivers, as well as direct assistance to help them meet their needs today. Childreach International: A non-profit organization Childreach International works with communities across the globe to develop programs that provide education, security, and healthcare to children living in poverty. Childreach International works with nongovernmental organizations and the U.S. authorities to ensure the highest level of accountability and transparency in its activities, and that donations go to helping children in need, not supporting bureaucracy. The organization also conducts monitoring activities to protect the safety and efficacy of its programs. In addition, Childreach International conducts its activities in an environmentally conscious manner, which includes tree planting and other carbon-offset activities. The Smile Train: The Smile Train works with physicians and dentists to repair cleft lip and palate, a genetic disorder that is easily remedied but causes problems if left untreated. Children in the developing world can be treated for approximately $250 each, allowing them to speak, attend school, and contribute to society. The Smile Train boasts one of the lowest cleft palate surgery costs in the industry and provides medical assistance to children in more than 70 of the poorest countries in the world.
