Ernest Hemingway
November, 2010
by Jeff Ervine
As someone who enjoys outdoor activities such as tennis, golf, skiing, and running, I count Ernest Hemingway among my favorite authors. Whether writing about bullfighting, fishing, or big game hunting, Hemingway always portrayed the outdoors with a starkly poetic quality. Despite a sense of distaste many of us feel for these activities today, Hemingway never took them lightly; rather, there was always a sense of deep respect for those who put themselves in danger, and even the animals who were killed. I think that Hemingway’s last major fictional work, The Old Man and the Sea exemplifies these qualities. We feel a great respect throughout the book for both the aging Cuban fisherman, Santiago, and for the giant marlin he pursues. At the beginning of the book, Hemingway describes Santiago as old and unlucky, having gone 84 days since his last catch. When Santiago sets off again, he quickly finds an enormous fish on the end of his line. Unable to pull the marlin in by himself, the old man finds himself dragged out to sea. What follows is an epic battle of wills between man and fish, ending three days later with the gradual weakening and death of the marlin. As Santiago begins the long haul in, however, sharks circle the marlin, devouring it fully until only the skeleton remains. Hemingway’s book shows the intense kinship that a man can sometimes feel for his adversaries as both fight to retain a hold on life. Of all of Hemingway’s novels, The Old Man and the Sea is perhaps the simplest, but it is also one of the most profound. When engaged in an athletic competition, whether in tennis or long distance running, I always feel the same respect for my fellow participants that I imagine Santiago must have felt for the marlin he struggled with for so many days.

Jeff Ervine: Hedge Fund Basics
September, 2011
As a finance professional, Jeff Ervine has enjoyed a long and successful career, and he currently serves as Chief Operating Officer and Chief Financial Officer for SES Partners Management, LLC. Previously, Mr. Ervine worked in executive and supervisory positions for multiple investment firms, including Salon Asset Management, Asset Alliance Corporation, and Exis Capital Management, Inc. Several of these companies offer hedge funds, a specific type of investment involving pooled, managed securities. In many cases, the hedge funds are private investment partnerships in which managers deploy multiple strategies to maximize returns.
Some of the methods utilized in hedge fund management to improve a return on investment include short selling, leveraging, and derivatives trading. Many of these strategies involve significant risk, but when used correctly also generate substantial returns. Thus, investors seek hedge funds managed by expert traders with solid records of generating returns and a significant level of understanding about financial markets.
Because hedge funds involve privately pooled and managed money, most remain unregulated by the Securities and Exchange Commission. The funds do not trade on exchanges, either; however, many investors utilize hedge funds because of the high rate of return.
If you are seeking a hedge fund, performing due diligence before investing remains essential. Investigate the record and experience of the fund managers, as well as the fund itself. Ask about fee structure and check to see how liquid your investment will be. Seek references. By taking these simple but vital steps, you can minimize your personal risk.
