The Cannon Act of 1970 officially founded the school that would later become The Ohio State University. This act, sponsored by then member of Ohio House of Representatives Reuben P. Cannon, established the campus of the Ohio Agricultural and Mechanical College. With 24 students, classes began on September 17, 1873. At the time, the new school operated out of the Neil farm, situated approximately two miles north of Columbus. The name changed to The Ohio State University in 1878, also the year of the first graduating class (totaling six men). Ahead of its time, the University then awarded its first diploma to a woman the very next year. From its inception, The Ohio State University has boasted a legacy of “broad gauge” liberal arts education centered on a diverse array of disciplines. The Buckeye Masters Swim Club (BMSC) remains the official swimming organization of The Ohio State University. • Thomas Wolfe, Jeffrey Paine
    December, 2010
Mr. Jeffrey Paine considers Thomas Wolfe one of the most engaging American novelists of the 20th century. Wolfe’s works are a unique blend of autobiographical content, abstract and impressionistic narrative, and analysis of early 20th century American values. Born in North Carolina, Wolfe proved himself a precocious young man and began studying at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill at the age of 15. While in college, he authored two plays that the local Carolina Playmakers performed, won an award for his philosophical writings, and served as editor of the school’s student newspaper. After earning his Bachelor of Arts, Wolfe gained acceptance to Harvard University. There, Wolfe studied with famed playwright George Pierce Baker, who produced two versions of Wolfe’s play The Mountains. Subsequently moving to New York City, Wolfe taught at New York University while attempting to sell his plays to Broadway producers. Wolfe began writing novels in 1926 after several of his plays were declined due to their excessive length. His first novel, which he originally titled O Lost, became Look Homeward, Angel and discussed his experiences growing up in North Carolina. Americans and Europeans alike received the novel with open arms and waited anxiously for his next book, which was not published for six years. His second novel, Of Time and the River, was a great commercial success. Shortly after the book’s publication, Wolfe decided to leave his former editor, signing instead with Harper and Row and giving the publishers a large body of manuscripts. The next year, Wolfe fell ill and doctors diagnosed him with miliary tuberculosis. He died shortly thereafter, but several complete works were published posthumously.
