Led by founder and CEO Jennifer Tresh, The Elena Tresh Foundation provides personalized support for families faced with the terminal or catastrophic illness of a child.
Based in Safety Harbor, Florida, The Elena Tresh Foundation is a nonprofit organization that works to support families as they care for a terminally or catastrophically ill child. After losing her own five-year-old daughter to brain cancer, Jennifer Tresh created The Elena Tresh Foundation as a living monument to the selflessness, kindness, and vitality of her own lost child.
Jennifer Tresh has never pulled a salary from the operations of The Elena Tresh Foundation, and she continues to privately subsidize its activities during these difficult economic times. Recognizing that the need for assistance far outweighs available funding, Jennifer Tresh works determined to bring the support of The Elena Tresh Foundation to those who need it.
Drawing on her own experience, Jennifer Tresh wrote and recently launched a book, Between The Bars, to offer hope, companionship, and encouragement to parents faced with the same horrible struggle. Jennifer Tresh donates all proceeds from the sale of books to The Elena Tresh Foundation, Inc.
The Elena Tresh Foundation provides a variety of services to families in need. With its financial resources, The Elena Tresh Foundation funds necessary family expenditures when parents are unable to pay for things like food, transportation, and shelter. Jennifer Tresh also understands the emotional necessities of joy and celebration; as such, The Elena Tresh Foundation offers increased support during holidays and birthdays. These programs allow children to choose gifts, and parents to choose necessary household items, which are then provided by The Elena Tresh Foundation. The Elena Tresh Foundation will also supply food, decorations, and other party supplies so that the family can celebrate without added logistical worries.
Through The Elena Tresh Foundation, Jennifer Tresh also created Elena’s Place, a sanctuary for children with illnesses and their families. From its location in downtown Safety Harbor, Elena’s Place will offer additional encouragement, counseling, and companionship.

The Elena Tresh Foundation's Tips for Choosing a Charity, The Elena Tresh Foundation
February, 2011
When choosing a charitable cause, The Elena Tresh Foundation suggests numerous manners in which you can find an organization that aligns with your values and charitable goals. The following outlines some tips and ideas for non-profit involvement.
1. Most importantly, assess the parts of your life or community that you value most. If you care deeply about animals or the environment, look to those areas as great starting points. Also try to identify causes or parts of the world you have always wanted to contribute to. Simply watching the news can spark great interest in Third World nation aid or regions that have been devastated by natural disasters.
2. Sometimes, non-profit organizations within your own community are highly gratifying, as you can contribute not only money, but your time as well. The experience of meeting people that you help directly remains a major reward of charity work.
3. Inquire to friends, family, and co-workers regarding organizations in which they are involved. Many individuals may offer insight into charities that are especially in need of additional services or assistance.
4. Do your research. Make sure, especially when donating money, that the organization you plan to support is well established and recognized by others as a credible organization. While it may be hard to fathom, some non-profit organizations can simply be scams. Visiting the location when possible, conducting Internet research, or attending a sponsored event put on by the organization will help to clear up any concern you may have.
5. Remember, you don’t have to limit yourself to one cause or charitable organization. If you feel torn between several good causes in your community or throughout the world, spread your support around; giving possesses few limits.
6. Take part and enjoy! You will rarely find other experiences as rewarding as charity involvement, so reach out and see how priceless giving really is.

St. Petersburg College Nursing Program, Jennifer Tresh's Blog on Bgisight
March, 2011
Jennifer Tresh established The Elena Tresh Foundation in honor of her daughter, who died from an inoperable brain tumor. As a former registered nurse, Jennifer Tresh has always dedicated herself to community service. She graduated from Florida’s St. Petersburg College (SPC) Nursing Program with honors in 1986.
The SPC Nursing Program awards graduates with either a Bachelor of Science in Nursing or an Associate degree, both of which enjoy accreditation by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission, Inc. and approval from the Florida Board of Nursing. Following graduation, students are prepared to take the licensing exam to become a registered nurse. SPC also offers an LPN (licensed practical nurse) Transitional Program and a Paramedic to RN Transitional Program. In order to go from paramedic to RN, students must complete 25 general education credits, including 8 hours of physiology and anatomy. In addition, they must be state-certified paramedics and possess a CPR certificate. After receiving a Florida RN license, nurses can attend SPC for advanced certificate programs in critical care, perioperative nursing, and emergency care.
SPC’s Simulation Center for Excellence in Nursing Education (SCENE) provides a realistic clinical environment for students in a cutting-edge laboratory. SCENE’s four rooms serve different functions: two are set up like hospital ICU/ER units and offer various clinical scenarios; one room contains five Laerdal VitalSim medium-fidelity simulators, a METI (Medical Education Technologies, Inc.) simulator, and an ECS (emergency care simulator); and the other room offers five high-fidelity simulators, including a Gaumard Noelle birthing simulator.
SPC partners with several local health care agencies to gain additional faculty members and increase enrollment in the Nursing Program. SPC-affiliated health care agencies include Largo Medical Center, Inc., Northside Hospital, BayCare Health Systems, BayPines Veterans Administration, and Morton Plant Mease. Participating health care centers include Kindred Hospital, All Children’s Hospital, Edward H. White Hospital, Helen Ellis Memorial Hospital, Oakhill Hospital, Northside Hospital and Heart Institute, and many more.
