  • Jessica Jourdan: HollyRod Foundation
    March, 2011

As an international model, Jessica Jourdan recognizes the importance of sharing her good fortune. With a focus on community service and philanthropy, Jessica Jourdan seeks to help make others’ lives better. One of the organizations that Jessica Jourdan supports, the HollyRod Foundation, assists people affected with autism spectrum disorders and Parkinson’s disease, as well as their families.

Founded by actress Holly Robinson Peete and former National Football League player Rodney Peete, the HollyRod Foundation originally sought help for patients with Parkinson’s disease. Holly Robinson Peete’s father, Matthew Robinson, received a Parkinson’s diagnosis when he was just 46. Recognizing a community need for patients who could not afford the high cost of medical care for Parkinson’s disease, the HollyRod Foundation stepped in to provide funding for treatment through the Department of Neurology at the University of Southern California Keck School of Medicine. When doctors diagnosed the Peetes’ oldest son, RJ, with an autism spectrum disorder, HollyRod expanded its mission to include autism, as well.

Today, the HollyRod Foundation continues its partnership with the USC Keck School of Medicine, providing assistance obtaining medication, therapies, adaptive treatments, and other services to families who would otherwise be unable to afford treatment for their Parkinson’s disease. In Los Angeles, the organization is also in the process of developing its first Compassionate Care Center for Autism, which will begin providing therapeutic and diagnostic services to children with autism spectrum disorders in 2012 or 2013.

  • Puerto Rico, Cuba, and Sweden
    March, 2011

Jessica Jourdan, an international fashion model, owes her striking good looks to Puerto Rican, Cuban, and Swedish heritage. An interesting mix, these countries of origin provide her with a rich cultural background and unique and diverse family traditions.

Puerto Rico is comprised of one main island and a number of smaller islands, located west of the Virgin Islands and east of the Dominican Republic. Also known as “The Island of Enchantment,” Puerto Rico boasts many cultural influences including Spanish, North American, and African. Largely recognized for its music, the melodies of Puerto Rico mix the many sounds of different cultures and traditions, producing unique sounds.

Another country known for its vibrant existence is Cuba. Also in the Caribbean, Cuba consists of several archipelagos and one main island. The largest Cuban city, Havana, sits on the main island. Known for its Spanish and Caribbean-influenced cuisine, Cuba remains a culinary hotspot, characterized by its abundance of plantains, tropical fruits, light sauces, and spices. Cuba is also known for its rich musical culture. The salsa, cha-cha-cha, and rumba stand out as popular Cuban music styles that have gained worldwide popularity.

Lastly, Sweden represents a very different kind of culture. Bordered by Norway and Finland, Sweden remains one of the largest countries in the European Union. Sweden has produced some of the most famous actors and filmmakers of the 20th century, including Greta Garbo, Ingrid Bergman, and Lukas Moodysson. Sweden is also renowned for its historic architecture and literary achievements.
