Educator and administrator Jewel McClinton assumed her current role as Principal of Lawrence Elementary School for Mathematics and Science in 2006. With strong interpersonal and administrative skills, Jewel McClinton continues to lead teachers and staff at the 500-student school, and she bears comprehensive responsibility for curriculum and instruction, budgeting, staff development, and the creation of policies and procedures. Jewel McClinton entered the field of education as a Graduate Assistant in the College of Education at Chicago State University after spending several successful years in sales and finance. In 1996, Jewel McClinton became a kindergarten and third through sixth grade teacher at Chicago’s Poe Classical School, where she gained experience in planning and implementing instruction and collaborating with other teachers to improve student performance. From 2004 to 2005, Jewel McClinton served as a Reading Specialist and Lead Literacy Teacher at Poe Classical School. In 2005, Jewel McClinton became a Principal Intern at Herzl Elementary School, assisting in the management of a faculty and staff of 60. Jewel McClinton demonstrated her aptitude for educational administration, supporting budget and operations management and instructional leadership for an academic year before joining Lawrence Elementary School of Mathematics and Science as Principal one year later. Having attended the University of Illinois at Chicago for her Bachelor of Arts, Jewel McClinton was awarded her Master of Education in 1998 from the same institution. Jewel McClinton will complete her Doctor of Education at Roosevelt University College of Education in May 2010, and she is writing her dissertation on the school improvement process, under the guidance of Dr. Susan Katz.
