My Career in the Accounting/Finance Industry, John Holowko
November, 2010
By: John Holowko
Ever since my undergraduate years at Rutgers University, Newark, I knew I wanted to pursue a career in finance. After acquiring my Bachelor’s degree in Accounting from the university, I launched my career in the industry as a Senior Manager for KPMG LLP, one of the world’s leading audit networks. In this initial appointment, I trained and directed professionals hired to provide assurance services to client companies with earnings ranging from $10 million to $10 billion. Over the course of 14 years, I coordinated accounting and reporting stipulations for a multitude of public organizations, participated in facilitating initial public offerings, forged and maintained client relationships for companies in foreign nations, and supervised due diligence analysis in the Mergers and Acquisitions Department. Following my departure from KPMG LLP, I accepted a position with Standard Motor Products, Inc., where I functioned as the Chief Accounting and Corporate Controller for five years. My duties in this position included improving the company’s balance sheet, cash flow, and general financial operations. I also assessed candidates for merger and acquisition transactions and drafted the company’s budgets and forecasts. From Standard Motor Products, Inc. I transitioned into youth-oriented media and retail, joining Alloy, Inc. as Senior Vice President of Finance and dELiA*s Inc. as Chief Financial Officer. In these roles, I applied the extensive skills I honed during previous positions to manage financial reporting internally and externally; oversee financial operations for particular merchandising activities; and conduct tax planning, corporate governance, and transitional service agreements. Since 2007, I have acted as Senior Vice President of Finance and as Administration Officer for Folica, Inc. My responsibilities encompass financial, tax, and human resources activities as well as developing a business model around brands in the beauty product industry.
