Supporting one of our endangered California state parks, John K Norris
November, 2010
Encompassing more than 600,000 acres, Anza-Borrego Desert State Park is California’s largest state park. Located in the southeastern part of the state, it is surrounded by several rugged mountain ranges including the Bucksnorts, Santa Rosas, Jacumba, Vallecito, and Pinyon. The park’s eastern borders are defined by the Borrego Mountains which trail into the famed Carrizo Badlands. With fossils remaining from previous eras, some of them over a million years old, the desert landscape of the Badlands yields some of the world’s most spectacular paleontology finds. With 500 miles of dirt roads winding throughout it, the park offers countless breathtaking vistas and endless opportunities to experience its widely varied topography. One of the most magnificent and sought-after thrills the park offers is the sight of wildflowers in bloom in the spring. Park officials say that the most frequent questions they are asked by visitors is when to time a trip in order to see the desert flowering at its glorious peak. They note that the question is impossible to answer with precision due to the vagaries of weather and other determining conditions. While each year’s peak occurs on a different date, the flowering season is between late February and the end of March. Understanding the factors that affect flowering, such as rainfall, temperature, sun, wind and their intricate interplay, is crucial to timing a trip. The park suggests learning about the conditions that create the best wildflower show, and then checking in on updates provided on the park’s useful website. In addition, the website lists recommendations for field guides and other helpful books on the subject. However, park and wildflower lovers agree that a walk in the desert is amply rewarding at any time, offering solace to those who may worry about missing the “best” moment. The Anza-Borrego Foundation (ABF) is a non-profit organization which assists in acquiring and conserving the land in and around the park, educating the community about the park’s resources, and supporting research in the region. In addition, the Foundation maintains a field school that offers a wealth of in-depth courses to visitors to the park. John Norris is a contributing member to the Foundation. Recognizing the perils which the California economy has created for the park system, John is committed to helping conserve the incredible natural resources of his nearby and beloved State Park.
