Mercury is a neurotoxin. For years, dentists, consumer advocates, and scientists have debated whether the mercury in dental amalgams can lead to health problems, such as autoimmune disorders, birth defects, and neurological illness. Depending on the study you read, you can find peer-reviewed scientific evidence that supports dental mercury as an illness-causing toxin and shows that mercury in dental fillings is a relatively benign substance with no demonstrable correlation to illness.
Regardless of conflicting studies, amalgam fillings continuously leak mercury vapor into your system, and mercury is a toxin. According to the World Health Organization, daily mercury exposure arising from dental amalgams ranges from three to nine micrograms per day, although numbers can be higher if you chew gum or grind your teeth.
Fortunately, alternatives to mercury fillings are available. Your dentist can provide either composites or sealants that contain resins, ceramics, cast metal, or gold foil. Ask your dentist about alternatives to amalgam fillings to explore your options. If you already have mercury fillings, a qualified dentist can help you remove them, replace them with composites, and counsel you on how to detoxify your body from any heavy metals resulting from the presence of amalgams. Look for a dentist who specializes in removal and replacement of amalgams.

After Dr. John Minye received his Doctor of Dental Surgery from the University of the Pacific Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry, he spent five years in the San Francisco Bay Area as an Associate Dentist in the East Bay cities of Oakland and Albany. In 1997, Dr. John Minye moved north to the city of Santa Rosa to take a position in the office of Dr. Douglas Chase. After living in the heart of California’s wine country, he set down roots in the area where he opened his own private practice, located today just off Highway 12.
In the 14 years since he moved to Santa Rosa, Dr. John Minye has enjoyed participating in local activities. An avid outdoorsman, he likes biking, camping, and scuba diving all year round. He also had the opportunity to pursue his interest in the pipe organ, including a role as a treasurer of the American Guild of Organists Redwood Empire chapter. Professionally, Dr. John Minye has access to one of the most engaged communities of dental health professionals in California. To supplement his affiliations with the American Dental Association and the California Dental Association, he maintains active membership in the Redwood Empire Dental Society (REDS), which serves Sonoma, Lake, and Mendocino Counties.
An organization of more than 350 dentists in the Redwood Empire, REDS works to promote the highest standards in our profession through continuing education courses, outreach initiatives, and social events. Along with regular workshops on the latest advances in general and specialty dentistry, REDS also works to ensure the future of our dental community by offering scholarships to promising dental hygiene students at Santa Rosa Junior College, located just 10 minutes away from my practice. Despite the difficult economic climate, REDS continues to sponsor worthwhile events like the recent Give Kids a Smile Day that relied on the generosity of his colleagues to provide free dental treatment to more than 400 underprivileged children and young adults. Dr. John Minye proudly serves as a member of his community and looks forward to serving Santa Rosa for many years to come.
I do not subscribe to the idea that a dentist should boost revenues by seeing as many patients as possible each day. To me, one-on-one dentistry, in which I personally meet with each patient and examine his or her teeth, provides the greatest benefit to patients. Moreover, it enables me to personally establish the dental health of the patient.
During initial consultations, I ask questions about the patient’s dental health and general medical history. Learning about each patient’s dental hygiene habits, including brushing and flossing and which products he or she uses, helps me evaluate whether any decay or disease was caused by poor habits or by some underlying health issue. I then determine the best plan to promote healthy teeth and gums. In some cases, this means repairing any decay or correcting the appearance of the smile. Other patients simply require regular cleanings and examinations to ensure continued dental well-being, addressing any issues that may arise before they become problems.
My patients value their time, and no one wants to wait in a dental office while the scheduled appointment time comes and goes. To overcome this common concern, I ensure that the receptionists schedule an ample amount of time for each patient and do not schedule more than one patient during the same period in order to maintain customer satisfaction. I strive to preserve my patients’ time in the same way I protect their oral and dental health.
