  • The Labrador Retriever, John Newman Oppenheimer

    By: John Newman Oppenheimer

Originating in Newfoundland, the Labrador Retriever is a dog with a diverse history and fascinating characteristics that make it effective in a variety of ways. Evolved from the St. John Dog, the Labrador has webbed paws, which lend it great efficiency in swimming. Its webbed paws are indicative of its original purpose: retrieving fishing nets from water. Known worldwide as the most popular type of dog, Labradors are loving animals who enjoy being close to and showing affection for their owners. Besides their status as pets, Labs have a number of qualities that make them useful in a large number of pursuits. For many decades, Labradors have accompanied hunters on expeditions. Specifically, retrievers fetch downed fowl on a hunter’s behalf. The Labrador’s refined sense of smell is often able to guide him quickly to his target. However, if a Labrador Retriever is unsure of a bird’s position, the hunter can guide the dog using different types of hand signals and whistles. The intelligence of Labradors makes them efficient assistance dogs. The Labrador’s intelligence, combined with a strong work ethic and a calm demeanor, have garnered the dogs much recognition in this capacity. Some Labradors have been known to go so far as helping victims by fetching blankets, covering the injured party, and then dashing off to the nearest human and barking for help. Labradors are also suitable as detector dogs for police and other official organizations charged with searching out specific targets. The Labrador’s excellent sense of smell is instrumental toward this end. For pet owners or officials in need of a dog that exhibits intelligence, athleticism, and the ability to undertake tasks before a human can name them, Labradors come highly recommended.
